Viet cease-fire brings Christmas peace to Viet Nam

Saigon reports a Christmas Eve cease-fire between U.S. and Vietnamese forces with a 6 p.m. start time and a guard against self defense until midnight. The Viet Cong had urged a 12 hour halt and seven mortar rounds near Chu Lai were described as field miscommunication, not a violation.

Weather Gifts of Snow and Cold Grip Montana

The Weather Bureau warned a cold wave would bring 15 below to 15 above temperatures across Montana by Christmas morning with heavy snow up to 6 inches in western regions. Libby reported about a half foot of snow as the system spread, with drifting and poor visibility expected and stockmen advised to prepare.

Christmas Weekend Traffic Death Toll Rises Across Nation

Highway fatalities climbed as winter storms grip the country. By 11 p.m. EST Friday 232 people were killed. A National Safety Council spokesman warned worsening weather could reduce deaths if drivers slow down and stay home. Two multi fatalities occurred early in the holiday period including a seven death crash in Mississippi and a Greyhound bus wreck in Oregon.

White Christmas Nears Mining City as Snow Returns

New snow moved in from the west with Missoula and Anaconda getting notable amounts. Butte saw only flurries hours after 7 p m forecast. Temperatures dipped to about 10 below at Butte airport, with an official forecast of more snow today and tonight and partial clearing Sunday.

Luci Johnson Engaged to Airman Pat Nugent at White House

Luci Baines Johnson 18 and Pat Nugent 22, son of Mr and Mrs Jerry Nugent of Waukegan Illinois, became engaged with White House approval. The announcement came from acting press secretary Joseph Laitin after a midnight statement. The couple planned a late summer wedding and the ceremony reportedly occurred at the LBJ Ranch amid Christmas celebrations. Nugent recently joined the Air Force and trains at Lackland AFB in San Antonio.

Fire destroys Military Park Hotel in Newark killing three

A four alarm blaze at the Military Park Hotel in Newark on Christmas Eve killed three people and injured about 30. Fire officials cited a nine foot Christmas tree and decorations as the fire's likely cause as guests were rescued from ledges and windows of the 12 story building. An earlier apartment fire nearby claimed eight lives in what investigators called suspicious.
