An unknown number of Londoners killed when a German bomb smashed a tenement where Christmas parties were underway. Amid debris a Santa figure and toys lay scattered as rescuers pulled bodies from rubble. About 150 people were in the building. fatalities remain unconfirmed.
Butte shoppers fill the streets as 500 lights stretch from Anselmo mine frame high above the ground spelling Merry Christmas. Floral Park plans a 6 pm start to turn on hundreds of living-tree lights. Girl Scout carolers brighten stores with holiday concerts amid mild weather.
London reports a feared German air assault involving an enlarged Luftwaffe and thousands of parachute troops aimed at Britain before spring. Observers expect night landings to exploit hangars and airfields, with mass drops at up to 50 fields to establish a bridgehead and suppress Spitfires and Hurricanes via initial bombing and airfield destruction.
Interpreting The War News notes London forecasts a triple front German push against England before spring. Churchill backs the view, saying Hitler must act within two months to offset Axis waning war strength. Winter invasion risk seems high despite long nights aiding attackers and limited defender losses.
Greek forces pushing deeper into Albania have captured new fortified heights in Teleleni Klisura and taken 300 prisoners along with war material. British-Greek cooperation attacked Italian positions by land sea and air. R A F bombers struck Brindisi Berati and an Albanian road hub as Greek infantry seized Tepeleni area villages and wagon weights despite cold and barbed wire.
British pilots conducted two major raids on Berlin overnight, hitting the center of the city. Six people were killed and 17 injured. the Dom cathedral was damaged, with losses estimated at about 1.5 million marks. Berlin reported fires in the suburbs and the German high command claimed non military targets were hit. London said the Berlin engine factory suffered many explosions, with fires and heavy bombing in the Ruhr and along the English Channel coast. Potsdam reported three civilian deaths from a single plane attack.
Montana officials report the improved highway into Virginia City nearly complete except for a six mile stretch west of Madison County. Grading and surfacing from Laurin through Alder finished before cold weather. Plans to complete the remaining section and develop the area for tourism aim to restore Virginia City to its frontier gold rush era appeal.
Draft headquarters said plans are underway to employ conscientious objectors on reforestation and soil conservation projects. Director C. A. Dykstra noted the program will use abandoned CCC camps and camps in state and national forests and be experimental for a few months to learn from early operation.
Thousands of shoppers fill Butte streets as Santa visits Christmas events and welfare groups. About 310 children at the Montana Orphans Home in Twin Bridges will wake to gifts stored for safekeeping, courtesy of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and later additions for Galen sanitarium.
Butte postal workers spent Friday tallying letters and greeting cards while cancellations near 151000. Postmaster Frank X Monaghan predicted Saturday parcel volume would rival peak days of past years as bundles arrived for distribution in the Mining City.
Butte forecasters predicted light snow today and tomorrow marking the first official day of winter. Yesterday brought unseasonably warm weather with a 50 degree high and thawing, while record cold had struck Montana recently. A resident quipped and hoped for more winter if this is it.

German raiders attacked Liverpool heavily while London’s raids were lighter after an early bombing crash. In the capital, underground shelters rang with Christmas carols and games as families endured intermittent gunfire and property damage, with no fatalities reported.
British forces and air units tightened the noose around Bardia on December 21 as naval and land artillery pounded the Libyan base. 901 prisoners were counted and four guns captured while RAF planes struck Italian airdromes at Berka and Gagala. An Italian deserter described the shelling as relentless and salvation seemed near.
James F. Scanlan, a Miles City dairyman living on Beckers Lane, was accidentally shot while hunting. Coroner Ralph H. Bray said there would be no inquest, noting Scanlan crawled through a fence with his rifle and a dangling wire may have pulled the trigger, the shot entering his right hip and exiting the right shoulder.

A typhoon battered the troop ship Etolin between Manila and Honolulu killing two sailors, Francisco Blansay and Pascual J. Nacional, both of San Francisco. The vessel, en route from Manila to San Francisco, tossed five hours in gale seas. others aboard were reported safe. It was to dock in Honolulu the following Thursday.
Twenty four of sixty nine civil cases to be tried at the forthcoming term were scheduled Saturday afternoon. One hundred potential jurors were drawn from a box containing names of Silver Bow county taxpayers. Women make up 35 of the jurors, the first Montana jury-women fact noted. Trials span January 6 to January 15 with multiple plaintiffs and defendants including McDonald Camitsch Mulcahy and National Surety Co. and Safeway Stores Inc involving Reeves Lightfoot Woolworth Riley Kossen and others.
