Madrid reports a quiet night as martial law remains in force and troops withdraw from city streets. Diario de Huesca suspended for commenting on Jaca mutiny leaders. court martial ordered for Jaca police over leniency with rebels. cabinet resignation rumors circulate.
Rescue vessels abandoned the search for more Oberon survivors after the Finnish liner sank off Laso island in dense fog. At least 40 believed drowned, many others missing as Arcturus rammed and fatally damaged the Oberon in the early hours, with crews and passengers abandoning ship into icy seas.
Two unidentified youths shot John A. Berglund a 42 year old hotel proprietor early today. He died later at a hospital. Police arrested one suspect who later appeared to have an alibi.
Sunday and Monday look generally fair with little change in temperatures across Montana. No significant precipitation is expected and conditions should remain mild and dry statewide.
Montana readers urged cooperative action as the legislative assembly opens its biennial session to set the stage for renewed business and industry. They urged the highway program use of Montana labor and materials and mandatory grading standards for farm products to boost local markets.
Federal jury in Kansas City Kansas considers Major Charles A. Shepard army surgeon accused of murdering his wife Zenana McCoskey Shepard. Judge Hopkins instructed and sent the 12 jurors to deliberate, with a verdict not yet reached after an evening session.
In WeWoka Oklahoma a gas well known as Wild Abe sent a 150 foot flame into the air as 60 million cubic feet of gas burned from the No 2 A B Douglas deep rock Oil and Gas well. A severed 3000 foot length of rotary drill pipe shot from the hole after a spark from friction. Continued on page 12.
The government appeals to the Supreme Court challenging Judge Clark in New Jersey and seeks a ruling that the Eighteenth Amendment was legally ratified and that the national prohibition acts are valid. Solicitor General Thatcher will press the point, with Attorney General Mitchell awaiting counsel responses.
Major Ra mon Franco and his companions who escaped from Spain after the Madrid revolt said they would take any job offered. Portugal lifted their internment and would provide transport out of the country. Franco preferred Argentina over Germany, citing friends there. Pablo Rada, Franco's mechanician, commented.
In Butte many Protestant churches begin Christmas observances with special programs. Choir musical numbers and Sunday school children's programs are featured. Catholic churches will hold midnight masses on Christmas Eve and special music on Christmas Day. The full programs appear on pages 16 and 17 of today’s Standard.
Two large trucks loaded with gifts will depart Butte for Twin Bridges to serve the state sanatorium orphans. A second truck will head to Galen tomorrow morning to deliver a wide range of presents to Galen and Twin Bridges children from four Anaconda Mining Company officers. The list includes bath robes kodaks kits sweaters toys shoes gloves and many other items.
Hundreds of toys and gifts will be distributed by about six hundred Butte Boy Scouts from the toy hospital starting Tuesday. The program will deliver dolls, trains, games, sporting gear, and books to children in 600 local families as a Christmas outreach by scouts acting as helpers and arrangers.
Chiang Kai-shek reports that government armies closed in on bandit and Communist groups in Hupeh Hunan and Kiangsi. He says outlaw forces are surrounded and fleeing leaders like Chumo are trapped. He hopes to return to Nanking and focus on civil affairs as red forces retreat toward Fukien mountains.
John Simpson national president of the Farmers Union says the Farm Board keeps cotton and wheat prices low by leveraging its lending power to farm groups to pressure markets. He urges Senator Walsh to push for an investigation into the board's marketing activities.
Large crowds filled Uptown Butte stores last night for extended shopping with shoppers wandering downtown from 6 to 9 pm. Merchants reported good sales as stores plan 9 pm closings Monday and Tuesday and 6 pm on Christmas Eve, with groceries open late.
Ger ritt John Diekema United States minister to the Netherlands and former Michigan congressman died at 71 in The Hague. He had served in the House of Representatives and represented Michigan in diplomacy.
James H. Rowe announced that over three million dollars will be released immediately for Montana road construction between January 1 and September 1 after Congress passed a 116 million public works bill signed by President Hoover. The Montana state highway commission will meet soon to arrange contracts across 12 districts, with Butte district slated for several early bids and many workers to be employed. Rowe noted a potential federal loan exceeding 1.5 million that can be matched by over a million in federal funds for road work, amid 6 million in federal use money in Montana.
Senator Borah of Idaho demanded in the senate an explanation why the Farm Board ceased wheat stabilization last spring when prices hovered around a dollar and did not restart until prices rose to a level the farmer could not live on.
Washington delegates adjourned at 12 05 a m for a two week recess over the holidays after the senate remained in continuous session for more than 13 hours.
F W Stark of the Montana Bean Growers Association visits Butte claiming Montana beans are the aristocrat of the bean world and that state growers ship millions in value to Chicago Kansas City Tennessee and New York while Montana residents fail to appreciate their quality. He notes California imports and fierce competition but asserts eastern Montana beans lead in quality.
