Bitter Sub-Zero Cold Shakes Dixie Snowbound South

Bitter frigid air gripped the nation from the Middle West to the Gulf Coast with record lows in Atlanta and Chicago. Snow whipped Lake Michigan regions. roads iced over and schools closed across Michigan Indiana Pennsylvania Kentucky while seven cold weather fire deaths and multiple icy highway deaths were reported.

Supreme Court Rules Emergency Need Proved to Validate Airplane Lease

Montana Supreme Court sent a crop-duster lease case back to district court to test whether an emergency need justified bypassing competitive bidding for the governor use of a twin engine plane after Gov Nutter's Jan 25 1962 death. Four justices said the emergency must be shown for injunctive relief.

Wreck Injuries Fatal to Man in Missoula Hospital

Isaac Redcrow aged 27 from Camas Prairie died in a Missoula hospital from injuries suffered in a December 6 single vehicle crash south of St. Ignatius on U S Highway 93. He had been in critical condition since the wreck, which left him alone in the vehicle. Redcrow was born August 21, 1936, served in the U S Army in Germany 1954–1957, and worked at a sawmill, as Montana’s traffic toll rose to 222 for the year.

Senators Back LBJ Aid Bill in Tight Vote

The Senate approved 60 to 32 a $3.27 billion foreign aid measure, aiming to send a final bill to President Johnson before Christmas. Johnson praised Kennedy era assurances on selling U.S. farm commodities to Communist countries and opposed a Mundt amendment restricting private credits.

Fire Kills Butte Man One More Local Death

Michael Vidrich an 81 year old former Butte miner died in a noon fire that leveled his two room frame home east of Butte Junior High School. Coroner says overheated wood stove caused the blaze and smoke inhalation killed him before firemen arrived. He lived alone near the family home as relatives checked on him daily. This marked the county’s fourth fire death of the year.

Firemen Stop Blaze In Crowded Flats Area

Three heavy firefighting units rushed to flats 314 to 318 West Porphyry Thursday night. The fire started with a burning mattress and smoke issued from the roof as firefighters doused interior wall flames. Assistant Chief Bernard Morgan found little loss while neighbors said the two story buildings housed transients and children played nearby.

State Launches Space Site Bid

Montana's Space Council opened with plans for a brochure to promote Treasure State resources to NASA. Members will present four minute talks the week of Jan 20 in Washington to stress five points including facilities, manpower, defense contributions, and Montana's recreational benefits of aerospace work.

Silver Bow County Signs Funding Bonds for 357000

Silver Bow County completed signing 358 bonds totaling 357706.42 dollars four officials, led by Dan J. O Connell, W T Duckham, and Jack C. Klemp, to fund 10 year debt. The Minneapolis firm handled the sale with Security Bank of Butte representing the syndicate. Bonds will be returned to Minneapolis for draft issuance. O Connell praised County Atty Robert J. Holland for legal work saving about one percent.

Reds Censor Reports on Race Trouble

In Moscow Soviet leaders voiced disapproval of public race issues as about 500 African students protested near the Ghanaian Embassy. Police blockaded access while loudspeakers urged passersby to move along. Censorship suppressed coverage of the demonstration and its clashes outside Red Square.

Paul Goodman a Bethel College sophomore built a 2 300 pound Christmas cookie wafer for KDWB winning 3 749 dollars. He used 1 100 pounds cookie mix 750 pounds powdered sugar 175 pounds shortening 200 pounds other ingredients plus 1 300 pounds frosting.

Three Alabama Guardsmen Charged in School Blasts

Three Alabama National Guard members including an officer were arrested and charged with setting off three explosions near the University of Alabama campus last month. Perkins Maxwell and Daniel faced bonds and pending grand jury action. The investigation tied to guardsmen on federal duty connected to campus integration and segregation tensions.
