Near collision with McNamara plane at Orly Airport

A near collision occurred at fogbound Orly when a Boeing K135 carrying McNamara and aides nearly struck a TWA Boeing 707 inbound from McGuire Air Force Base. Captain Sutton and copilot Combs shut off power and slammed the brakes, expending two tires as the 124 ton aircraft stopped within 1000 feet of the other jet.

African Students Stage Kremlin Protest Over Death

About 500 African students surged police barriers and marched to the Kremlin gate in Moscow to demand answers after the death of 29 year old Asare Addo. A delegation met with education minister Vyacheslav Yelutin, who said Addo froze to death, a claim protesters disputed. It marked the first known public demo by foreign students against Russians.

Butte Leads $1.1 Million in Montana Road Awards

Montana Wednesday set a new yearly high for highway work with the State Highway Commission awarding $2,766,308 in contracts across twelve projects, topping last year’s record. Butte area secured about $1.1 million in bids including a 2.8 mile stretch on Interstate 90 near East Butte and a 825-foot Clark Fork River bridge northwest of Tarkio.

Senate Debates Johnson plea for foreign aid funds

California Man Claims Slain Hardin Rancher offered 20000 to Kill His Wife

Tamin Dying of Maywood California testified that rancher Frank Tschirgi offered him 20000 to kill his wife Margaret in a 1951 incident. Dyvig said he refused twice as the murder trial of Robert and Clara Thomas continued in Montana court with retrial motions delayed until after holidays.

East Berlin Christmas visits open via hole in wall

West Berliners gained temporary access to East Berlin during Christmas after the East German wall section near the Oberbaum Bridge was removed. Tens of thousands queued for passes at West Berlin schools, with up to 50 000 potential visitors. 8 000 remained in line at closing.

No Comment From Butte Mayor on Federal Job Rumors

Mayor Vern Griffith refused to confirm reports of a federal appointment, saying he does not deal in rumors and remains the mayor of Butte. He noted several residents asked about his plans but stated he has not resigned and will continue serving the city. Griffith is in year five of a six year tenure.

City Council Closes Year With Insurance Bid Approval

The City Council wrapped 1963 business and prepared for a January 1954 meeting. They approved an $8,085.89 bid from F. E. Eddie Thomas Insurance Agency for city vehicle coverage after committee review and a possible later conference with the legal department. Deshler Veatch bid noted at $11,727.53 with Mayor Vern Griffith reappointment.
