Skylab 3 crew Gerald Carr W R Pogue and Edward Gibson have grown about three quarters to one and a half inches since launch on November 16 while waist measurements shortened. Dr Story Musgrave noted overall fitness remains high and suggested spinal discs absorb more water in zero gravity causing height increase.
An Iberian Airlines DC10 carrying 167 aboard clipped a runway pier area and crashed on landing in rain at Logan International Airport. Sixteen injured, none killed. Plane bounced twice, skidded about 200 yards, stopped near runway edge. one engine burst into flames but was quickly quelled. NTSB sending team led by Isabel Burgess to Logan.
The Senate approved President Nixon's nomination of Sen. William B. Saxbe to be attorney general by a 75 to 10 vote. Saxbe, 57, former Ohio attorney general, will replace Elliot L. Richardson who resigned amid the Justice Department turmoil following Archibald Cox’s firing. Majority Leader Mike Mansfield urged brief remarks due to snowy, icy conditions.
Senator Barry Goldwater criticizes President Nixon for not fully addressing the Watergate crisis, saying the public sought truth and questioning executive privilege. He argues Nixon’s response harms trust and cautions against buying into the administration.
Former IRS commissioner Caplin says Nixon's 1969 gift of vice presidential papers likely failed tax deduction standards. He notes lack of evidence of an unconditional transfer by July 25 1969 and no acceptance by Archives or similar agency. Caplin sees no criminal action but discusses tax equity under law.
The City Council Committee of the Whole voted 6 to 1 to place an amendment on age and residency for police on the Wednesday agenda. State law sets ages 20 and 40 with US residency. Butte requires two years in Montana and six months in city. Mayor Micone supports the change to widen applicant screening. 28 applicants are awaiting academy entry. Police Commissioner Lee Wulf cites 19 applicants with only three acceptable. Dissenting Terry Kelly favors lowering age but allows residency move.
Montana's Health Department asks the Montana Supreme Court for permission to hire outside experts from Portland to aid in defending air pollution variance decisions affecting three large metal plants. The court previously signaled restraint, and lawyers warn against letting out-of-state counsel set a precedent.
The Butte school board voted 4-2 with two abstentions to suspend all administrator travel not tied to sports or interscholastic activities. Trustees cited gasoline waste while Supt. Ken Olsen and Trustee Betty Thomett objected, proposing a voluntary program and resisting hiring a professional negotiator. The action aimed to conserve resources at a Monday meeting.
Butte public students will leave Friday and miss 90 minutes early with return January 2. Parochial students finish exams Wednesday and depart Friday noon, back January 2. Montana Tech ends classes Friday at 5 p.m and resumes January 7. Amos Center students dismissed Saturday and return January 2.
