In Havana a rumor surfaced that Gen. Gerardo Machado would resign and that Martinez Ortiz would become acting president amid rioting by students and police. Officials denied the claim as martial law and troop patrols returned to restore order after another tense day.
Senator Overman of North Carolina died in Washington at 12:30 tonight after a brief illness. He was 86 and is survived by his widow and three daughters Mrs. Edgar N. Snow of Washington Mrs. E. C. Gregory and Gilbert Hambley of Salisbury.
President and Mrs Hoover hosted a formal White House reception for the judiciary. The event, led by the Supreme Court, drew federal judges and Justice Department officials in a line of ranking government figures at the Washington residence.

Sirloin and round steak run several cents lower, rib roast and chuck under by mid single digits, plate beef near 13 to 14 cents under, pork chops under by about 3 to 5 cents, with sliced bacon commonly offered at 40 to 45 cents.
In Hankow China police seized lists and 300 counterfeit badges after a plot to assassinate President Chiang Kai-Shek. Ten plotters confessed including an 18-year-old girl. The raid disrupted plans for a public welcome and a shooting then distraction to aid escape. More arrests expected.

Odell Sorrell was arrested in Kaufman after applying for hospital treatment for a cut above the eye. He was identified as one of four robbers who stole about $11,000 from a prom Tex State bank yesterday. Barrell claimed the wound came from an automobile accident while officers said two bandits were wounded in a gun battle. The search for the four men focused on Athens as officers questioned Sorrell.
Dallas police arrested Fred H. Barnes who posed as Santa Claus on a downtown street and handed out $20 bills to bystanders. Officers found two pints of whisky on him but said he was not intoxicated and released him.
