Mail Rush Opens at Butte Civic Center

Butte opens its civic center as an auxiliary mail distribution point for Christmas. Postmaster A H Wilkinson says about 7,000,000 pieces will move this year, up from 6,700,000 last year, with 1,700 sacks processed daily for parcel post from the San Francisco region.

Khrushchev Unveils 7 Year Soviet Farm and Industry Drive

Premier Khrushchev outlined a seven year plan to triple chemical output, boost fertilizer, plastics, and irrigation to end crop failures. He cited drought losses and said the state would spend about 46.2 billion dollars, funded largely from current-year plan surpluses, while rejecting political concessions and foreign price gouging.

Studebaker to Close U.S. Car Plants Move Production to Canada

Studebaker Corp. announced it will end U S auto production and assembly in South Bend Indiana and shift all car manufacturing to its Hamilton Ontario plant. Twelve non automotive divisions will stay profitable. President Burlingame called the move practical to keep Studebaker in the auto business. The shutdown threatens about 5 000 South Bend jobs. Canada will import Studebaker cars via existing U S dealers. Parts warehouses and some South Bend operations will continue for components and distribution. Governor Welsh promised state efforts to ease the impact on South Bend and Indiana.

FBI Report Affirms Oswald Killed Kennedy Alone

A Federal Bureau of Investigation memo sent to the Warren Commission declares Oswald acted alone in the Kennedy assassination. Knowles Dam Fight Fails as Conferees Cut Missouri Basin Funds

House and Senate conferees failed to settle the Knowles Dam issue on the Flathead River Montana while approving an $817 million two year authorization for public works in 11 river basins. They backed New Hope Dam Sprewell Bluff Dardanelle and Wauika dams, and bank stabilization on the Missouri River below Garrison. Congress also dropped a Buy American amendment.

District Judge Rules: Fort Harrison Burglary Falls to Federal Jurisdiction

District Judge Lester H. Loble dismissed a Helena youth's burglary charge, ruling Ft. William Henry Harrison west of Helena lies under federal jurisdiction. The Lewis and Clark County attorney's office moved to pursue federal charges against 19 year old David W. Hahn, the alleged intruder at the officers' club on Oct. 24. The judge directed advising federal authorities of the decision.
