Jakarta reports Indonesia orders immediate evacuation of about 46,000 Dutch residents as its claim to West New Guinea escalates. Officials say most will be expelled while skilled technicians may stay. The move marks a decisive end to colonial era presence in the region.
The Netherlands government urged an emergency NATO meeting to discuss Indonesian developments and expulsion of Dutch nationals. Officials warned of solidarity measures from coordinating evacuation to freezing Indonesian deposits as Jakarta pressed for rapid Dutch withdrawal from the former East Indies.
Jacob Neu miller aged 49 a Vida area rancher died from injuries after his car missed a curve on Highway 13 north of Vida in Mc Cone county. Coroner said skull fractures and a crushed neck and chest. Body found about four hours after the crash. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth and numerous children.
Butte retail stores will stay open until 9 p.m. Saturday night as one of three late shopping opportunities in the 1957 Christmas season. Morning hours begin at 8 45 a.m. The extra Saturday hours result from an agreement between merchants and the retail clerks union.
