Northern Pacific mainline construction halted Friday when a Mountain Bell telephone pole sits on the rails near Columbia Gardens Road. Officials say the delay stems from a communications failure but the pole will yield the right of way, not the track.
An air crash near Albuquerque New Mexico involved a twin engine plane from Las Vegas reportedly carrying 11 people. Details on identities and causes were not immediately released by authorities.
The Midland Empire Fairgrounds main auditorium in Billings burned Friday night, leaving brick walls standing and sparking small roof fires nearby. No injuries reported. rebuild estimated at about 1.5 million dollars. A grass fire burned for an hour before containment.

Montana congressman Arnold Olsen rejected a Washington columnist’s claim that he took a Spiegel Inc payoff. Olsen said any contributor who expected influence would be refused, and he identified seven of 13 major outside donors from his 1968 campaign. He said he knows lobbyist Cyrus Anderson but saw him rarely, and that Spiegel did not contribute to his campaigns.
The Senate voted 48 to 41 to nearly double minimum Social Security benefits and raise all payments by 15 percent starting Jan 1 with 25 million beneficiaries. The rider to the tax reform bill would cost about $6.2 billion and move the wage base from $7,800 to $12,000 by 1973.
