Northern members press cloakroom signings to bring the wage hour bill to a House vote before Christmas. The effort gains momentum as 218 signatures loom, despite Southern opposition and farm measure cotton provisions becoming entwined in the dispute.
Alarm in Shanghai over 13 Americans marooned in central China amid Chinese Japanese fighting near Mokanshan. Mission HQ and the U.S. consulate fear for their safety after a week with no word. Names include Prof and Mrs D L Sherett and four children and several others. a seized steam launch was returned.
Butte Fire Department asks each member to bring an extra button for Captain Michael Gilboy’s vest as his chest has expanded since Monday. His son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs M Gilboy welcomed identical twin sons at St James Hospital weighing five pounds one ounce and five pounds two ounces. The mother and babies are reported fine and Captain Gilboy is doing well.
Tom E. Castle, 49 years in Montana journalism from compositor to editor, leaves for Lake Charles, La., for rest. He owns the Virginia City Madisonian printed in the state’s oldest printing office. The Madisonian plant is described as such on the Virginia City paper’s page.
Winners at the International Livestock Show include Mount Haggin Land and Livestock Co of Anaconda Montana taking first and third in breeding Hampshire yearling ewes with Malcolm Moncreiffe of Big Horn Wyoming placing second. University of Wyoming wins first for breeding Hampshire yearling ram and second for three ram lambs. Wyoming Hereford ranch of Cheyenne places first in breeding Hereford heifers calved Sept 1 to Dec 1 1936.
Reservations for the civic club dinner at the Finlen hotel tomorrow evening are due by 5 pm. The event begins at 6 30 and ends by 9 15 with Dr Elam J Anderson Linfield college McMinnville Ore as speaker on The Battle of the Orient.
Secretary of Commerce Daniel C. Roper urged a general revision of the tax system in a Chicago address to business leaders. He called for resolving the utilities dilemma, shared responsibility between labor and management, and emphasized debt reduction and a balanced budget while supporting railroad reforms and a large building program. President Roosevelt telegraphed support, aiming to boost employment and purchasing power.
The annual Christmas tree party for sons and daughters of the American Legion will be held Monday December 20 with presents for all children. Winners from Armistice Day cross country received medals. A joint meeting with the auxiliary is set for Friday December 17 with a Butte male chorus program and luncheon. The post also sponsors a turkey card party on December 15 and honors were awarded to local students with medals for top places.
Katherine Sire, 17, from Best Montana, won the top award in the best dressed class at the Ninth National 4-H Style Review in Chicago. Her wine wool dress, black velvet hat, shoes and purse cost $25.92. Other west of Mississippi contestants also placed.
In Washington President William Green of the AFL summons the executive council to Friday talks amid the ILD factional dispute with John L. Lewis. Reported aims include the wage hour bill and continued peace negotiations between Green and Lewis with Harrison and Murphy attending.

The Butte City Council adopted an ordinance setting a $100 annual license for buses. A minority report urging $25 per bus was defeated. Attorney P B Geagan and manager John G Evans pressed for changes to apply only to full time scheduled service and for standby equipment. Alderman Barry O Leary favored a $23 fee.

Stillwater County Attorney P Heily said Frank Robideau a 38 year old Wheat Basin farmer has been charged with the murder of Mike Kuntz in the first information and will be charged with the murder of Mrs Kuntz this week Robideau is to be arraigned this week before District Judge Ben Harwood of Billings Heily added the confessed slayer told reporters he would plead not guilty by reason of self defense to the first degree murder charges
In Missoula on December 1 a car crashed into a fire hydrant and overturned. Miss Irma Underhill, 22, died from her injuries. Miss Helen Stanton, 26, bakery manager and driver, was severely injured. Underhill was the daughter of William Underhill of Alberton and had a sister in Townsend. Stanton’s parents live in Hamilton.
Amateur astronomers are advised to view the 4 22 p m partial eclipse from Big Butte. J Hugh Pruett of the University of Oregon provides glass and photographic tips and notes the event will be visible only in the western United States and on the Pacific Ocean, not eastern Montana.
London reports the British cabinet will mediates negotiations with dominions on a colonies pool to appease Hitler by offering recognition in principle of his colonial claims if he abandons defiance and seeks international cooperation. A 16 state Greyhound strike ended when drivers accepted a company proposed contract granting pay raises but denying a closed shop. The walkout had cut service on eight lines from the Atlantic to the Mississippi, north of the Ohio and Potomac rivers.
Attendance in Butte public schools for the period ending November 24 totaled 6,469 across 16 elementary and two high schools, up from 6,153 the year before. Grade schools saw the largest gain with 4,488 students, while Butte High and Washington junior high combined housed 1,981, just under last year’s 1,995.
