Fifty branch managers and field personnel from Amalgamated Sugar American Crystal Sugar Great Western Sugar and Holy Sugar visit Anaconda Montana Wyoming and Idaho. They tour the phosphate plant copper and zinc facilities and attend a luncheon at the Montana Hotel with a discussion on sugar beet and fertilizer industries followed by a tour of Butte Hill.

Deer Lodge Fair Parade Hits Record Size and Cheer

Deer Lodge county parade draws 725 participants with 106 entries reported by chair Harry Blodgett. Sunny weather aided the event as judges awarded top spots to five commercial floats: The Shack Shaver's Jewelry Rustic Drive Inn Lois' Beauty Shop Bud's Toy Shop and five organizational wins to the Miner's Union Elks Lodge Ski Club Women's Benefit Assn.

Smokejumpers Fly to Mt Powell Fire

Sixteen smokejumpers from Missoula were sent to a forest fire in Bowman Lake country north of Mount Powell near Deer Lodge district. Merle Hofferber placed the fire at three to five acres with reconnaissance by Fred Mass. Joe Gorsh spotted the smoke from the Highland Lookout near Butte. After the flight Mass said the fire covered no more than two acres and the jumpers could handle it.

Rioting Convicts Subdued at Nebraska State Penitentiary

Sixteen ringleaders of a 13 hour riot at the Nebraska State Penitentiary fired on the segregation building, then surrendered after guards with shotguns and National Guardsmen opened fire. Warden Joseph Bovey said the building was damaged but no injuries occurred and the situation was under control. The riot followed two earlier incidents in five months.

Missoula Man Feared Drowned After River Accident

Raymond G. Sager a 42 year old Missoula butcher fell into heavy rapids of the Flathead River about a mile below Kerr Dam near Polson during a fishing trip. Four men including his brothers and a companion searched downstream to three miles before his disappearance. Sheriff to organize recovery and Montana Power will shut off water at the dam to aid searches. Sager survived by widow and one child.

Crash in Glacier Kills Motorist

John Jam, 26, of Kalispell, was killed when his car plunged off a canyon road in Glacier Park after an earlier overturn. A following motorist found Jam, who had apparently started the car with a spare key and driven away before rangers found his body. Jam was a former Montana State University student.

Boys State Lads See Virginia City

Virginia City hosts ninth Montana Boys State delegates from Dillon on a nine day program. The youths toured historic sites and local gulches learning government operation while enjoying a picnic. Ted Hazelbaker, director, said all boys will hold roles in the mythical state. Mayor Phillip Lovell opened the program with a goal setting challenge.

Fire destroys Van Vleet Lumber mill in Rainier
