Helena Aug 21 Increasing attendance as the fair week advances brought nearly 8 000 spectators today. Officials praised the weather and the smooth running of displays as awards near completion. Crowds filled the race track for entertainment, with James Griffin of Chinook noted among attendees.
Five planes racing from Seattle to Chicago completed the Spokane to Portland to Chicago leg with N B Mamer finishing first at 5 05 18. John Blum followed at 5 13 03 Frank Kammer 5 17 40 Floyd Keadle 5 27 03 and Bert Rouff 5 27 40. The Northwestern Derby flyers head toward Butte for more events with total prizes near 200000.
Carl L. Brattin of Sidney was elected most worshipful master of Montana's Grand Lodge Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. The sixty-seventh annual conclave will meet in Butte, opening the third Wednesday in August, with Leroy A. Foot elected deputy grand master and other officers named, re-elected, or continued.
In Billings on August 21 Arle Johnson 19 shot 18 year old Ailene Greenleaf after mistaking her for her twin Alice whom he loved. Ailene wounded, Alice and the gunman’s actions lead to a fatal self-inflicted bullet. Ailene Greenleaf remains in hospital with a left lung wound. The sisters Greenleaf, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Greenleaf, are connected to the case as eyewitnesses and relatives.
In Wausa Nebraska on August 21 four armed burglars blew open a garage vault, took $60, kidnapped three men including two watchmen, and tied them to a fence near Waterbury before fleeing in two cars. The hostages escaped and went to Sioux City to aid identification from police rogues’ gallery photos.
Alfred M. Hubbard, once a rum runner, testified he helped convert a dry enforcement agent, amid a probe that led to charges of wholesale corruption and bribery in the district. The former operative acknowledged turning the agent as officials face trial for alleged dry law corruption.
In Stinnett Texas on August 21 a group of four inmates escaped the county jail briefly. Mrs. Co O Moore wife of the sheriff rushed to the jail with a gun and helped stop the breakout by freeing Deputy M L Kelly and restraining the inmates. The escape was short lived as a posse led by Sheriff Moore recaptured the fugitives. An inmate A D Payne remained in a closed cell and did not attempt escape.
Chicago August 21 Charles Evans Hughes chief justice of the United States addressed the annual American Bar Association convention urging states to resist federal encroachment and stressing the need to improve justice administration, especially criminal law. The speech, delivered before foreign visitors and broadcast on NBC through WGN, emphasized preserving state authority within local government while navigating interstate commerce changes.
Eddie Schneider lands at Western Air Express airport in Albuquerque at 3 15 M T. making his Los Angeles to Albuquerque elapsed time seven hours and 58 minutes while attempting a west to east transcontinental junior flight record.
Helena Aug 21 Governor J E Erickson telegraphed he would arrive tomorrow from President Hoover drought conference to give the welcome address at Summit during the Roosevelt highway opening celebration in the region.
Milk distributors in the Kansas City area declared war to the last bullet as a two week strike escalated. A milk truck was fired upon near the city, a tank punctured, and spurting milk marked the clash. Twenty masked farm women and ten men blocked another truck, driver W. J. Bratten reported.
Los Angeles report says Aimee Semple McPherson will resume duties at Angelus Temple with a younger look and lighter frame after a period of illness. She spoke to reporters from her Malibu Beach cottage amid a feud with her mother Minnie Kennedy, declining to answer charges and avoiding facial operation questions as aides vetoed most queries.
A daughter born at Glamis Castle to the Duchess of York joins the royal line as Elizabeth remains ahead in succession. Sir Henry Simpson attended. beacon on Hunter's hill prepared to announce the birth. Home Minister J R Clynes notified King George and officials. event marked by traditional royal protocols.
Ralf and Philip Rogers nine and eleven, sons of Mr and Mrs John Rogers of 352 East Galena, are the subjects of a city wide police search after not returning home last night. Their guardians notified police when they failed to come back after dark and efforts with friends yielded no sightings by midnight.
In a fierce gale off Fowey Cornwall the Islander, Royal yacht squadron vessel, was driven onto Lanivet bay rocks and wrecked. Eight aboard are believed lost including Commodore Henry Douglas King former mines secretary. Other known aboard include Surgeon Captain A R Brailey and Commander Bud. Continued on page 2.
Reports from Billings and vicinity estimate storm losses at over 150000 with bean crops 40 to 50 carloads lost, valued at 100000 to 150000. Ten thousand acres damaged including beets and hay, churches report window damage, and bridges washed out near Roundup.
A Montana forecast for Friday and Saturday shows fair skies with little temperature change. No major storms expected as high and low ranges remain near seasonal normals, bringing dry, comfortable conditions to most towns and regions. Local officials note light winds and clear nights ahead.
County attorney H J Freebourn said an arrest is expected today in the October 3 shooting death of Steve Cholinga, a French war flyer and local American Legion member. He had been killed as he approached a car, with the assailant still at large. Freebourn traveled from Montana to North Dakota in pursuit of a key witness amid a nationwide search.
In Denver Colorado a cleaning fluid explosion destroyed a house injuring two women. Nellie Bethel 32 died of burns shortly after the accident Myrtle Kennedy 32 was in critical condition at a hospital. Fumes spread from the basement laundry to the furnace room where they were ignited by the gas furnace pilot light.
Helena Rotary members report progress boosting the state fair with Rotary exhibits races and music. Rotary day at the grounds was dedicated to Rotary organizations and a banquet at the Shrine temple featured speeches by Cunningham Venable Keilman Herrin Evans Davis Galen and Stew art with the Butte Mines band providing music.
