Fifteen persons are fatally hurt and more than four score are injured in multiple train wrecks. A fireman and engineer are among the trapped, alongside eleven Black passengers, as wreckage becomes a seething inferno.
Fifteen people killed and more than four score injured in four separate rail disasters Sunday. Major losses include Henrietta Oklahoma where 13 died aboard a St. Louis San Francisco passenger train derailed by an open switch. Two engineers and two firemen were among the dead. 11 victims were black. Engineer Pete Wolfe and Fireman H F Bryan perished in the wreck. In Michigan, two trainmen died in a three freight collision south of Owosso. 69 passengers were injured. A fifth wreck near Condit Delaware County Ohio derailed five of 12 coaches. a defective rail is blamed.
Fifteen people drown when the Spanish steamer Ogono collides with the British tug Kings Cross in the North Sea off Clumber. The Ogono sank in six minutes after a midships blow, with 25 crew aboard. Only eight crew plus two others survived. the captain and most officers perished. Survivors were landed at Grimsby.
Washington Aug 18 The senate half of the farm relief tariff special session will reconvene tomorrow after a two months recess but will do no work until September 4 when a revised tariff bill is put to debate. The finance group could not finish rewriting the measure last May 28 and Republicans reached a plan with Democrats to recess in short blocks until after Labor Day to finish revision. The committee has printed a report detailing rate changes and will next address administrative provisions. The completed bill should be ready within a week for senators to study before September session. Printing of rate changes will be available for Tuesday papers if finished. hundreds of proposed duty changes from the house have been reviewed, including many increases and decreases.
Lieutenant Nick Mamer, flying the Spokane Sun God, achieved the first non-stop round transcontinental endurance flight. He refueled at Roosevelt Field after reaching New York Sunday afternoon and immediately began the return flight to Spokane. Captain Frank Hawks supervised refueling and the crew left Roosevelt Field with a note of thanks and a plan to reach Cleveland.

Lieutenant Alford J Williams conducted four taxi trials across an hour with a 4000 pound craft and a 30 foot wing span. Wind and water favored attempts but the plane remained on the water unable to rise.
Madison county residents welcome President Hoover as a weekend visitor at a mountain fishing camp. Governor Byrd emphasizes Virginia hospitality as Hoover plans to depart early tomorrow for the White House, seeking relief from constant contacts.
Mrs Florence Lowe Barnes wife of a California minister proved the standout on the first day of the Santa Monica to Cleveland women's air derby. She flew 73 miles in 27 minutes 21 seconds, leaving Santa Monica at 2 16 p m and reaching San Bernardino at 2 43 21 p m.
Denver Aug 18 A rescue party led by Robert Collier head of Estes National Park forest ranger service plans to begin at 3 am to reach three people trapped on the east face of Longs Peak. The group includes Dr Albert Stacher of Boulder his wife and a young male friend on a narrow ledge 2000 feet above a sheer drop.
In Lisbon, three Swiss aviators awaiting favorable weather said they expect to take off at 6:00 AM Monday on a Paris to New York flight. They plan the Azores route but will land there only if fuel dictates.
In Ilfracombe Devon on August 18, 1971, Eagle Scout James E B Berry, 16, of Cush ing Oklahoma and the Boy Scout patrol attending the world jamboree, died after a fall from a cliff.
In September American magazine Mrs. Calvin Coolidge says the former president’s 1927 no run statement came to her only hours after it was released to the press during a casual talk with a friend. The note indicates she learned of the decision without her husband’s aid.
Cleveland Aug 18 The Anti Saloon League denounces references to Wayne B Wheeler by Mabel Walker Willebrandt as a popular indoor sport by a few drys selling articles to newspapers and magazines. F Scott McBride praises Wheeler for 35 years of service and criticizes Willebrandt. Continued on Page 2 Col 1.
Britain seals its Napier seaplane behind wrap cloth in Calshot England as it prepares for the Schneider Cup next month. The British team has tested several planes with Italy and the United States, achieving speeds over 300 miles an hour at times. A semi public exhibition of the planes is planned for tomorrow.
A zeppelin flight round trip from temperate to Arctic fringe and back draws crowds as Graf Zeppelin passes 150 miles north of Kasumigaura airport at 1:50 p m local time. Reports note clearing weather and heavy media interest with telephones scarce and pigeons used to relay stories. An escort of military planes heads out as Tokyo officials arrange a welcome ceremony.
A five year old boy, James Jennings of 13 West Copper Street, was struck by a car driven by Remo Fantini of 112 Blue Wing Avenue Walkerville near Main and Quartz streets after 6 p.m. He was taken to Murray Hospital by the driver, who reported the accident to police claiming the child ran into the path of the vehicle.
Butte plans a Wednesday of three large picnics and many outings as stores banks markets and barbers close for Commercial Day. The holiday honors clerks and market employees and traces to 1903 when D J Hennessy Sr founded the event and an employer employee picnic. The clerks union ended its picnic in 1924 while butchers joined in later years. details continued on Page 2.
