Two tankers collided in a fogbound Newport harbor morning blaze. At least 15 dead and 36 injured as 650000 gallons of gasoline spilled. Coast Guard ended search with three still missing, crew list showing names and roles.
The United Nations General Assembly was summoned for an emergency session Friday to discuss the Middle East. Dag Hammarskjold set 2 p.m. opening, with debate to follow next week after procedural agreement. Ambassador Lodge urged broader debate, while Arkady Sobolev cautioned against premature conclusions.
John Angelo LaMarca, 33, was executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison for the kidnap slaying of 33 day old Peter Weinberger. He entered the death house at 11 00 p.m. and died at 11 03 p.m. after appeals failed. He prayed with Roman Catholic chaplain Rev. George McKinney and was visited by his parents and brothers as the hour neared. He had previously dodged six stays of execution through state and federal courts. He had abducted the baby from the Weinberger home in Westbury on July 4 1956 and abandoned him to die in a thicket after ransom notes failed to yield money. The crime was traced by handwriting.

Seven interstate jobs receive 92 percent federal funding as Montana builds a record year with about 40 million dollars in active work including 612 miles of highway and 12,000 feet of bridges and overpasses. Highway Engineer Fred Quinnell Jr. cited 107 state projects underway with contracts awarded totaling 22.74 million dollars through July. Beaverhead and Madison counties feature 10 miles of the Dillon Twin Bridges road in 100 days under bid.
Anaconda Copper employees in Butte were feted at a dinner for 25 plus years of service while company officials forecast brighter days for Butte. Richard Newlin pledged reinstitution of a future program as metals prices recover, echoed by Chester Steele and Edward Renouard.
A high of 89 Thursday in Butte was the hottest day so far this summer. Last year the high reached 91 on Aug. 4, and the last 89 occurred on Aug. 9, 1957. Forecasts show 85 on Friday with possible thundershowers Friday afternoon.
Helena AP reports Montana recorded the warmest day of the summer with temperatures reaching 101 in Miles City, the highest among the Weather Bureau's 18 Montana stations this year. A repeat warm spell was forecast for Friday, following an earlier century reading at Miles City last Sunday.
The Montana State Pioneers and Sons and Daughters of Pioneers opened their annual conventions in Anaconda with events at the Montana Hotel and Anaconda High School. Roy Crismas and Julia Allen Stock presided. Rev. George Burns led services. Mayor Earl Sullivan gave the welcome. Copperettes 4-H members performed. sessions continued Friday with lunch by Deer Lodge county 4-H leaders and a 6:30 banquet at the Montana Hotel led by John F. Russell.
London reports Prime Minister Macmillan told Khrushchev he remains anxious to attend a summit to end the East West cold war. He left open the door for talks on the Middle East and criticized Khrushchev for spurning a Security Council meeting proposal, noting his earlier stance on a heads of government gathering.
The 1958-59 budget for Butte's Civic Center was set at 76,577 by the Board of County Commissioners, 22,217.96 less than the requested 98,794.96. Manager R O Rouleau will earn 4,417 for July and August, with payroll cuts across the staff and reduced janitor and watchman positions.
In eastern Montana a grandmother, Mrs. David McConaha, 65, died saving her grandson Richard Hass, 12, from a blaze that destroyed a farm home in Sidney. Richard and his grandmother perished in the basement. four young sisters were saved outside. Father was away buying groceries. mother was with the baby in Billings. Coroner R Homer Gorder reported the fire’s origin is unknown.
Anaconda smeltermen mark 75 years with a Diamond Jubilee picnic and parade on Friday led by general chairman Al Gordon. The day features a children’s parade, floats, a market of events, awards at the City Common, and a fireworks finale with an expected 3,500 participants across divisions.
A fierce Midwest weather outbreak struck Milwaukee and Chicago areas. In Chicago two boys, Santo Rizzo and Michael Pohrte, aged 14 and 6, died by lightning during a brief storm on the far south side.

A 13 pound monkey along with frogs and fruit flies briefly ascended to 60 000 feet in a plastic balloon before the crewed mission failed when the balloon ripped. The craft descended into a wooded swamp near Pine City Minnesota with only goldfish casualties. Air Force and Winzen Research noted the monkey was in good condition after recovery and caused no confirmed cause for the rupture.
The House approved a four year extension of the reciprocal trade program by 161 to 56. President Eisenhower endorsed the measure in a letter to Rep. Wilbur Mills as the bill, a Senate House conference compromise, becomes law. The extension is the longest yet and aims to curb tariffs through tit for tat negotiations.
