Mayor A C Villasenor of Nogales Sonora says about 17 people are drowned in the flood that hit Nogales Ariz and Sonora Mex. A second storm at 4 p m stopped rescue work for three hours while five dead and eight still missing were reported and 3000 residents were affected.
Clau dius H Huston of Tennessee resigns as chairman of the Republican National Committee after a tumultuous tenure. A new slate led by Senator Fess of Ohio and Robert H Lucas of Kentucky takes charge for the fall campaign with Fess succeeding Huston and Lucas named executive director.
Partly cloudy conditions are expected in Montana on Friday and Saturday with cooler temperatures. Forecasters note a slight chill entering the region as the end of the workweek approaches.
Stinnett Tex Aug 7 Officials say Amarillo attorney A D Payne confessed placing three sticks of dynamite in his car causing his wife’s death and injuring his 9 year old son. Murder charges filed after arrest. Payne sought swift execution and claimed plans to die by accident.
W H Bowers and a party of men explored a cave 12 miles west of Anaconda reporting five distinct chambers and extensive stalactite and stalagmite deposits. Bowers has lived in Anaconda since 1885 and says the cave had never been explored before.
Billings hosts the forty seventh annual convention of the Society of Montana Pioneers as veterans from 1868 and earlier reunite. Children join in the joint meeting under the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers while city officials and judges welcome attendees and mark the event with remarks.
A car crash at a filling station on the Kansas highway sprayed gasoline from a broken pump igniting into a pillar of fire. John Meredith of Kansas City died. Virgil P. Ryan, his wife, and their young daughter were badly burned and hospitalized in Belleville. The driver Mrs. Ryan survived the crash but is in critical condition. Meredith’s body was taken to a local mortuary.
W. M. Montgomery, a leading Anaconda Montana businessman civic figure and fraternal organizer, died in Los Angeles after 35 years shaping local projects. A native of Pennsylvania about 70, he left Anaconda for California in 1920 and ran a meat market then entered the cattle business.
Chicago police recovered a pistol from 16 year old Lawrence Free after he forced shop owners to remove their pants during robberies then hid in a YMCA lecture hall taking a psychology course.
President Hoover pushes a nationwide survey via county farm agents to assess drought damage and farmer suffering. Questionnaires seek data on families needing aid to feed livestock through winter and local feed availability. Carl Williams outlines rapid aid through the grain stabilization corporation within four days.
Pocatello Idaho August 7 midwestern style report notes William M Jerdine former secretary of agriculture and current United States minister to Egypt predicted improvement in business and agricultural conditions during his visit to his mother and sister.
Manuel Herrick, former Oklahoma congressman, was held to a federal grand jury in Baltimore on a moonshine operation charge after federal raiders arrested him at a Hanor still in St Marys county. He faced a $1500 bond and was jailed overnight when bond could not be secured.
Montana editors gather in Butte as Mayor Beadle hands over city keys. Gov. Erickson to address progress of editorial aims. The event includes a dinner, golf outing, airplane tour, and an annual banquet with speakers. Attendance nears 200 as delegates convene.
The United States Department of Forestry plans an $80,000 project relocating about four and a half miles of road from Pipestone pass eastward toward Harding Way. B F Kitt, federal highway engineer, oversees plans with the forestry department funding and the Bureau of Roads handling engineering. Bids will be called after plan approval. The route begins in Silver Bow county, enters Jefferson, and briefly exits forest limits. The project removes heavy grades and keeps 75 percent of the road at a 3 percent grade, with a maximum of 5 percent.
A large northern alliance offensive began in Henan and Shantung as 500,000 troops push toward the Yangtze and Nanking. Chiang Kai-shek counters from Tsinan Fu. Marshal Feng Yu-Hsiang leads in Hanon region aiming for Hankow and Suchow Fu.
A night mob raided the Grant county jail in Marion Ind and hanged two black men charged with fatally shooting Claude Deeter. A third man was taken from custody and beaten severely as police said all three confessed to the crime and implicated Shipp in firing the shots.
Alexander C. Lester 18 of Christian Brothers high school and Brophy Grocery worker died after his car skidded and overturned twice on the Big Butte road shortly after 5 pm Witnesses Jim Mulholland and Joseph Lester freed the unconscious driver He died moments after being rushed to the emergency hospital Coroner Mike Salot investigates the fatality Lester was en route to aid others.
Mrs Sarah T. Berry widow of James Berry and sister of the late D J Hennessy died after a brief illness at a local hospital. A Frederickton Canada native she moved to the United States 50 years ago and later settled in Montana. The death drew widespread regret from friends and the Berry family recently relocated from St John New Brunswick. Continued on Page 2 Col 4.
James Huggins fifty died in a hospital from spotted fever contracted after a wood tick bite in the Big Hole country. He had lived in Butte since eighteen ninety-three and worked at Elm Orlu and Steward mines. Surviving are three daughters a sister in England and a grandson.
