Misplaced funds clear path for UM science complex bid

Bozeman Montana officials resolved a $40,000 funding misplacement tied to the University of Montana science complex. The extra federal money plus contingency funds will cover costs and likely award the mechanical contract to Burgess Mechanical Contractors of Missoula. The dispute arose after bids opened and Rainbow Electric challenged a bid, prompting alternates to be cut and a shift in the apparent low bidder from Burgess to the Reber Co. of Helena.

First Anaconda layoffs cut work force 180

The Anaconda Co zinc plant in Anaconda closed at July end with 180 layoffs, all hires since June 4. About 250 young temp workers, many college students, faced removal with 30 in cleanup. Next week headcount drops to 19 as regular staff return from vacation. Fourteen regulars seek transfer to Great Falls zinc operations.

Great Falls Man Missing in Action in Vietnam

Alex Pomeroy 21 of Great Falls listed as missing in action in Vietnam. Defense Department said he was last seen during hostile action Friday. search began Saturday. Pomeroy, US Army, had been in Vietnam since May after graduating Great Falls High School in 1966 and attending Montana State University Bozeman.

Anaconda Co Seeks 30 Underground Miners in Montana

The Anaconda Copper Co. plans to hire 30 experienced underground hard rock miners, per the Montana Employment Security Commission. This marks the first demand since the 1968 copper strike settlement, with metal mining employing about 2,800 workers, far below the 1966 pre-strike peak of 12,300.
