Ziegler said the President told congressmen that his new policy was accepted by all Asian leaders he met during the trip. Reports from other Asian areas suggested unease with the doctrine, though South Korea and Taiwan were not visited.
The House approved a compromise extending the 10 percent income tax surcharge through the end of the year and sent it to the White House for signature. The broader 5 percent extension through June 30, 1970 remains tied to a tax reform bill facing Senate opposition.
A class action filed in US District Court by coal miners and widows from six states alleges mismanagement and exploitation of the UMW Welfare and Retirement Fund. Defendants include union officials led by W. A. Boyle and the National Bank of Washington. The suit seeks at least 75 million dollars in damages, alleging funds were shifted to non-interest accounts, depriving the fund of millions in interest over five years.

Arlene Parker, a hospital aide, dived into a lake near Homestake to rescue 10 year old Ricky Pollock after he slipped into a deep hole. She performed artificial respiration until the boy was handed to a bystander and rushed to Silver Bow General Hospital where he recovered at home the next morning.
John Ogilvie age 59 a heavy equipment operator for Milwaukee Road died in an early Monday morning fire that gutted his one bedroom trailer near Three Forks Gallatin County authorities reported the blaze was seen around 310 am by a neighbor in Old Town two miles north of Three Forks Coroner Alexander M Schmall said Ogilvie was found near the door of the aluminum trailer the intense heat melted parts of the walls of the small structure.
Clerks unions in Butte to discuss adding Friday evening hours to returns with Monday night shopping. Textiles and variety unit meet at Miners Union Hall at 8 with Barney McGarry and William Smyers leading. Drug unit gathers at 9 30. East Park Plaza Merchants Association votes to add Friday nights while keeping Monday.
A massive fire in Hardin Montana destroyed a Campbell Farming Corp grain elevator rated at 50 000 bushels of wheat and 30 000 bushels of barley. Sparks threatened nearby homes prompting evacuations in the southeast part of town.

Bozeman 1st Lt. Hal Henderson 25 is the 189th Montanan killed in Vietnam. He died in a crash between an observation plane and a helicopter about 27 miles west of Chu Lai with four others. A 1967 Air Force Academy graduate, he left a widow Margo Mumper and daughter Lisa Marie.
