Captain W E Cason recalls Monroe in 1898 when eggs sold for 20 dozen for a dollar and meat around 4% cents per pound. He contrasts with current prices, noting eggs near 30 cents a dozen, meat about 16 cents per pound, sugar around 9 cents per pound, and flour at over $9 per barrel. He observes living costs have risen about tenfold while wages have not kept pace.
