New York courtroom proceedings resume Monday over the appeal for a new trial of Hans Schmidt the priest condemned for the Anna Aumueller murder in 1913. Defense claims new evidence concerns the victim’s death and the confession details a ritual blood sacrifice blurring the case.
The fortress of Tsing Tau on the Shan Tung peninsula in China surrendered Friday night. The allied siege by Japan and British forces ended the German hold on the Asiatic mainland, with heavy losses reported on both sides and Japanese gains including control of the German railway west from Tsing Tau.
German war correspondent Heinrich Binder describes army aviators in artillery reconnaissance. Sam Rhodes a white man was sentenced by Judge Hammond in the superior court to be hanged November 27 for the murder of Walker Green a prominent county farmer. Rhodes claimed he waylaid and shot Green. The jury was out 20 minutes and Rhodes mother fainted when the sentence was announced.
