The Charlotte Observer report details rapid rebuilding across the Catawba and Yadkin basins. Mills, hydro plants, and transportation links suffer wide damage while telegraph lines are restored to enable coordinated efforts.
Ernest Hinson visits family in Swainsboro while Nancy Lathan and others visit relatives. Death of Eva Mae Parker prompts funeral at Waxhaw Baptist Church. School to begin July 24 with new teachers Prof Motte Louise Gondelock Queen Belk. Ida Lathan survives lightning strike. Union meeting in Monroe and Levi meeting planned at Midway. Severe storm damages crops and trees. Lathan family reports a large moccasin found with eight young. Wild Rose letters go unanswered.
Grier Springs colored about twenty, bound over for the next term on a charge of mule theft from Waxhaw. He denied guilt and joked in court as he described town life and handcuffs, while remarks about George Washington and Andrew Jackson sparked laughter. He was jailed awaiting bondsmen at $100.
Norwood and Phifer of Monroe rode, hiked, and waded through mountain floods returning from Weaverville. They witnessed roads washed away, rails torn up, and bridges collapsed from Saluda to Tryon, finally reaching Charlotte by foot and boat after a night in Gastonia.
The Walkersville Presbyterian Convention near Waxhaw July 10 1916 drew strong turnout despite stormy weather. Clerks and ministers from Mecklenburg Presbytery including Gurney Mellwaine Shankle Crane McLaughlin Hough Adams and Watson led sessions on missions church finance and home building. A large dinner followed daily with devotions and a notable lecture on young work by Rev W J Adams.
The Wednesday Study Club proposes a public library in Monroe with space at city hall offered by the aldermen. The Women’s Club backs the effort, donors pledge books, and Mrs J A Bivens of Raleigh supports the cause. A permanent library association is planned with expert guidance for a Carnegie library future.
Nearly one hundred deaths are believed from the floods with about half in North Carolina. The body of J N Gordon a Southern car inspector at Charlotte was found seven miles below Belmont bridge. A woman two men and a baby drowned at Chimney Rock. Deaths from Transylvania to Madison County total 29.
County announces an institute for colored teachers to be held in Monroe starting August 7 led by Prof. J W Paisley. Teachers must bring twenty five cents each to cover costs for industrial work materials including rafia and water colors as required by law, says County Superintendent R N Nisbet.
The big German submarine liner in Baltimore harbor is ready to sail with a load for Germany. Its departure date is uncertain as both sides expect a sea escape while British and French ships patrol offshore. The U S government labels the vessel a merchant ship with no arms, and only the commander knows when she will slip out.
Rev. R. M. Haigler begins a series of protracted meetings starting the fourth Sunday in July at Mt. Zion with Rev. P. Little, then First Sunday in August at Oak Grove with Rev. D. F. Helms, Second Sunday in August at Wolf Pond, Third Sunday in August at Corinth with Rev. J. W. Whitley, and Fourth Sunday in August at Philadelphia with Rev. B. C. Snider.
British and French forces reported steady gains against German lines, claiming satisfaction with results as the big assault continues since the month’s start. Russians also press their attacks while Germany and Austria are pressed on all sides but show no major retreat.
Civil tensions ease as President Wilson and General Carranza move toward settlement. General Trevino reports fourteen bandits killed yesterday. A rumor claims Villa has retreated with six men to the mountains.

Huntley of Lanes Creek township as the original inventor and patentee in the 1850s, with improvements later by a Mr. Lytch of Laurinburg.
