Letters From Europe Reveal a Young Lieutenant’s Claim of Life
A letter dated November 1 1916 from Wein Austria written by a young doctor now serving as a lieutenant in the Austrian army to a friend in Moree describes his survival amid heavy fighting. He quips about Florida cigarettes and asks the friend to aid his return home while contrasting quiet moments with war’s grim realities. The item also notes a separate shooting at Mt Airy involving Dr Moorefield and editor Johnson’s son, plus assorted war senate and public notices and a brief survey of wartime relief efforts and political debates in North Carolina and beyond.
