Belk Brothers Store Fire Wrecks Monroe Block
A major blaze gutted the Belk Brothers main store on Main Street Monroe causing about a hundred thousand dollars in losses with insured coverage around fifty two thousand dollars. The fire started in the rear of the nations department and spread to the millinery and wholesale areas. Firefighters and volunteers battled flames all night, with Charlotte ready to assist but Monroe holding. The building will be repaired. insurance adjusters expected to assess losses today.

Conductor Horton Killed in Wreck Near Monroe
A freight conductor named Gus Horton was killed when three runaway cars struck a coach, a tank car and engine near Monroe. The crash also injured flagman A. A. Ellwanger and fireman Eugene Polk, with several others shaken but alive. Horton’s smoldering body was found, and the wreck crew cleared the track hours later. He leaves a wife and two children. funeral plans were not set.

Court heard testimony about a Greek vaudeville performer who allegedly insulted five chorus girls and then charged patrons fifteen cents for grapefruit punch. A manager intervened and Crumb struck the Greek with a dish, hitting him on the face. Crumb testified fearing for the manager’s safety.
