American steamer Housatonic sunk by German submarine

The Housatonic, a 2143 ton steel steamship built in 1891 and formerly named the Georgia, was torpedoed off the Scilly Islands. It sailed January 6 from Galveston to Liverpool with 444,200 bushels of wheat. The captain and three mates were rescued by a British armed watch. fate of others aboard is unknown. Lloyd's Agency confirmed the sinking.
