Tuberculosis sermon urges air, exercise and school reform

Rev L M White preached on tuberculosis on Tuberculosis Day at First Baptist Monroe urging better air in schools and more exercise for men. He cited Red Cross seals and alarming US death figures while warning several local homes showed dangerous filth. urged annual medical exams and rapid action at first symptoms.

Monroe Bears Wingate On Fast Team In Local Game

Monroe high school, with 7 of 32 points from a 7Y scorer, relied on speed and teamwork in a close contest against Waxhaw. Notable play included Goodwin Crowell and Ernest Vestel for Waxhaw, Vestel scoring all of his team’s points while hailed as one of the state’s fastest high school forwards. Local high schools form a sports association to boost boys and girls athletics. Monroe slated to host Wingate next Friday with a lineup featuring Hingon Crowell Ayers Austin Stewart for Monroe and Vestel Ves tel McCain Sims Helms for Waxhaw.

Ballots for Both Slogan Spurs Union County Equal Sufrage League

A local equal suffrage league forms after a Gertrude Watkins lecture. Mrs A M Secrest chairs with officers including Mrs Eugene Ashcraft and Mrs E M Griffin. Cotton Drops in Market as Government Crop Outlook Shifts

Football deaths rise in 1916 season by AP figures

Football claimed 16 lives, one in the south, during the 1916 season. Last year there were 16 and in 1815 there were 15. Officials say not a single death occurred in any game where players were fully trained mentally and physically for the severest test, and only one college man was among the victims.
