Ten Acres Sustains Family of Eleven Says Pollard

A Jackson County farmer GW Pollard, who owns ten acres on Sewell Avenue near Independence, testifies that with intensive farming he fed a family of eleven for twelve years. He cultivated four acres berries, four acres strawberries, one acre mepsberries, plus orchard and vegetables, keeping horses and livestock, canning fruit, and teaching his children in country schools. He argues a profit of about $250 per acre annually on average, with some years reaching $500, and asserts that careful market timing and small all-year labor make ten acres more productive and less risky than a large general farm.
