Death of John M. Thomas a Monroe pioneer and postmaster
John M. Thomas, born August 5, 1834, a prewar merchant, Confederate veteran, and postmaster appointed by Grover Cleveland, died Wednesday at 5:30 PM at his daughter’s home after months of illness. A lifelong Baptist, he lived in Monroe and Lilesville, leaving behind his wife Elizabeth Redfern, two daughters and two sons. Funeral services were held yesterday at four o’clock with interment in Monroe cemetery.
