A hurricane-like storm cut Pensacola off from communication. five killed and several injured near Crestview Florida. Mobile and the Mississippi coast escaped major damage though Pensacola bore the brunt with high winds and falling barometer.
New Orleans anxiously awaited word from Pensacola as a tropical hurricane swept from the Gulf of Mexico. Wires were down since yesterday with wind near 100 miles per hour and unknown damage. wireless attempts produced no reply by 9 a.m. Telegraph and telephone lines likely not restored until tomorrow.
Montgomery reports indicate a gulf hurricane strike from Pensacola moving northeast. Wind and rain caused extensive damage across Andalusia Florala Dothan Troy and other towns with five inches of rain in Montgomery and winds near 55 to 60 mph. No casualties yet and rail service halted with over 500 passengers affected.
On September 29 hostile aircraft raided the southeast coast of England. About twenty enemy machines participated and bombs fell in Kent Essex and Suffolk with no casualties and only minor damage reported. Some attacks reached London but none penetrated outer defenses. two German planes were shot down.
Nine Industrial Workers of the World leaders arrested in Chicago on seditious conspiracy indictments faced bonds of 10 000 each, except William D Haywood held at 25 000. Dozens more were seized nationwide with many released after questioning. Federal raids linked to I W W headquarters yielded the indictments.
A Central News dispatch from Petrograd says about 150 Russians from socialist and other political groups have been hanged by German soldiers since Riga was occupied. The report notes the figures across the occupation period and cites ongoing reprisals.
Diplomatic representatives of entente allies in the United States will attend the Southern Commercial Congress in New York on October 16. They will be welcomed by Mayor Mitchel at a city hall reception and by Oscar Straus and Senator Fletcher at a formal address. J J Jusserand will respond. Attending diplomats include ambassadors of France Britain Italy Japan and Russia, ministers of Belgium Serbia Cuba Panama Siam and Portugal, and the Greek chargé d’affaires.

Major Jackson Morris assigned to rifle brigade. Brigadier General Williams returns from Washington to command. Hattiesburg avoids the storm though rain continues.
Private Jno. Rogers, a Black soldier, was arrested in El Paso after allegedly deserting from Douglas Arizona. He says some Black soldiers planned to shoot up the town and had secretly obtained ammunition. the claim is under investigation.
Alabama will be fair and cooler tonight with a likely fair day tomorrow and moderate north and west winds. Mississippi sees a cooler night with southeastern portions cooler and Sunday turning fair with generally moderate west winds.
Assistant Fire Chief Geo Myrick bruised by falling brick. 8 C Pickens manager Taylor Lowenstein injured in fall from ladder. Frank Reed of Creole Fire Company slightly hurt. Buildings burned include T G Bush Grocery Company in Commerce and Exchange Alley, Cotton Exchange Building at Commerce and St Francis, Brown and Brown at St Michael and Commerce.
A Friday night blaze raged through Commerce Street in the Brown Brown building area. Three-story Brown & Brown, five-story T G Bush, and the Cotton Exchange suffered total loss estimated at 275000. Three people injured including Assistant Fire Chief George Myrick and B C Pickens. Fireman Manuel Tapia narrowly escaped. The aerial unit was damaged when a wall collapsed. Alarms were sent to police. investigation continues.
A Minnesota governor and public safety commission request expulsion of Wisconsin Senator La Follette was presented in the U S Senate and referred to the privileges and elections committee by Vice President Marshall.
Paris dispatch notes violent artillery fighting on the right bank of the Meuse in Verdun last night as the sole activity on the front. London report says there was usual artillery activity on both sides with nothing of interest to report.
Traffic on the Louisville and Nashville between Mobile and New Orleans was declared open at 1 PM and southbound trains resumed. Train No. 6 arrived at 12:55 PM, three hours late, with Superintendent John Bose of the New Orleans and Mobile division reporting no known loss of life and noting damage along the line.
Paris reports that the Austrian reply to the Pope's peace note did not include the supposed supplementary German communication on Belgium. A Havas dispatch from Rome says the communication is non existent. A Berne wireless dispatch claimed Germany would evacuate Belgium under conditions.
British airmen dropped seven tons of explosives in raids on Zeebrugge lock gates and Belgian military sites on the night of September 27-28. The admiralty report lists targets including Zeebrugge lock gates, St Denis Wentram airdome, Gontrode airship shed, Houttave airdome, with all aircraft returning.
A German aviator reportedly confirmed that French ace Georges Guynemer was killed in battle behind German lines. The prisoner said Guynemer was buried just behind the front line after the clash with a German airplane during ongoing hostilities.
Mr. R. G. Cobb traffic manager said about 40 sheets of exhibita prepared since September for the Meridian rate hearing to be held in Montgomery next Tuesday were destroyed in the fire last night. The remaining 60 sheets were with a stenographer and are intact. All chamber rate records and other records were lost in the blaze, a loss to the city.
In Greens Ro North Carolina on September 29, all effects of Mrs Maude A King held by Gaston B Means now jailed at Concord for her murder were turned over to Mazie Melvin the dead woman's sister. Means' counsel filed the claim in response to contempt proceedings before Federal Judge James E Boyd.
Washington reports a push to have the senate pass a resolution reaffirming U S war aims and the administration policy. Administration leaders call it the senate's answer to critics who decry the war.
