A large batch of cases mostly for violating the national prohibition law and a major conspiracy involving 45 defendants will go to trial in federal court next week. The second week of the special court is expected to last several weeks with no session on November 23. Trials include alleged rum runners captured during coastal operations near Mobile and other conspiracy figures named in the federal grand jury indictment.

Whitehurst pleads guilty in federal liquor case
James Whitehurst entered a guilty plea in federal court after a trial jury could not agree. He received one day in jail in addition to 49 days served awaiting trial and faces another pending charge. Silas Lundy pled guilty to possession of a still with a $100 fine. Horace Wilson pleaded guilty to a related charge with a fine, and Tony Soutouis admitted a third offense with six months’ reporting to the federal building. Sheriffos Pay to Sell Seized Stills Facing County Board

Sam Taylor Dead in Florida Town
Samuel Taylor, a Mobile native and former marine engineer, died suddenly in Jacksonville Florida. He was United States inspector of steam boat boilers for the Jacksonville district.
