Senate OKs War Tax Cuts and Excise Increase Plan
In Washington on May 31 the Senate finance committee trimmed the war tax bill by adding $80 million from new excise taxes on coffee two cents a pound tea five cents sugar half cent and cocoa three cents and repealing the 12 12 1/2 per cent munition tax. Import taxes on coffee and tea will apply. Estimated revenue totals sugar 50 million coffee 18 million tea 3 million cocoa 7 million. The committee also exempts denatured alcohol used for near beer from taxation and expects final measures to raise about 1.5 billion dollars, down from the House level of 1.8 billion.
