Villa forces attack Ojinaga opposite Presidio Texas. Mexican garrison flees to the American side. Women and children flee across the border as the assault begins. Associated Press reports from May 30.
Reports from Managua say a dispute arose between Nicaragua's government and the American collector of customs. A cable to Washington warns of taking over customs due to financial strain tied to the canal concession, which has not yet been built.
Berlin war office reports inactivity on the Franco Belgian front aside from scouting and artillery fire. Other fronts are quiet with minor actions near St Quentin where prisoners were captured by our forces. The eastern front shows no major developments and the Macedonian front remains quiet.
The war office says fusillades on all fronts with a Russian airplane dropping four bombs on an enemy position near St Anislavoff. Five air lanes released about forty bombs over Odganze with no injuries to Russians. Our aviators clashed with the enemy. one Russian airman was killed.
New York May 30 Enough potato parings are being saved by the chef of a popular uptown restaurant to plant one fourth acre on Staten Island as an experiment to determine what crop can be obtained from such seed. A park department farmer will supervise the project for the mayor's committee on food supply.
Amsterdam May 30. Dutch delegates say the socialist conference is postponed until July 15 or later. The final date hinges on the arrival of French and Italian delegations.
Major General Wood at Charleston headquarters announced nine of twelve training sites for the southeast have been recommended to the war department. The list includes Spartanburg Greenville and Columbia in South Carolina Augusta Macon and Atlanta in Georgia and Anniston Alabama with two additional camps at Atlanta and one more location pending.
Col F M Maddox will lead a demonstration showing an infantry company of 3 officers and 150 men in drill. The event mirrors full wartime strength and includes a machine gun demonstration by blindfolded gunners. Exercises start at 2 o clock on field day near the fortifications.
ERROL HARANSON argues Mobile needs factories and shops fueled by developed facilities. By opening the Black Warrior river Mobile would gain a critical outlet to rich iron and coal fields, making river access essential to future welfare and growth.
Judge R T Ervin of the U S district court agreed to serve as general chairman of Mobile’s committee to raise 12000 for Mobile’s share of a fund to establish Y M C A branches in army concentration camps nationwide. A 100 member business leaders panel is forming, with final names due tomorrow. Sunday June 3 is set as Y M C A Army Work Day in the state.
Commencement exercises set across city and county schools with Barton Academy leading as the largest class, 115 graduates including 81 girls. Other schools will award certificates for moving into high school and hold closing exercises with songs drills and recitations.
Prof. E. W. Conway YMCA physical director will demonstrate various swimming strokes to boys who recently received free instruction to teach all schoolboys to swim. He will be assisted by R. Tipton Dumas. Buttons will be awarded to boys who swim fifty feet after the demonstration.
At the W B Paterson Oil Company office it was announced contractor J A Joullian will start drilling the companys well this afternoon or tomorrow morning. It becomes the third oil well under way in town as Mobile Pennsylvania Oil builds derrick and Alabama Gulf Oil & Gas resumes drilling after cementing six inch casing. Mobile Oil Company reports drill depth over 1000 feet.
French war office reports violent artillery activity south of St. Quentin during the night. A German assault on Mont Blond in Chamtegnc was repulsed with casualties left on the field.
Fore cast shows likely showers tonight and Thursday with cooler temperatures Thursday across Alabama and Mississippi.
A meeting of the men of St Matthew's parish will be held at St Matthew's church in Oakdale this evening at 7 30 to organize a lawn party on the rectory grounds June 12 and 13. A previous meeting was postponed for the Oakdale home guards drill.
The United States commission of engineers arrived in Paris on May 30. Members Major William Bar elty Parsons Major William J Wilgus W A Garrett and Captain A B Barber met Ambassador Sharp and were received by the minister of war. Col Henry W Thornton escorted them through British lines. They traveled from Boulogne to Paris by automobile and expressed eagerness to see the big guns.
Federal officials report 15 to 20 young Americans cross into Mexico daily from El Paso Texas. They carry money and come from affluent backgrounds. The exodus aims to dodge the draft, with many seeking oil mining or other untrained work south of the border. Most originate from Eastern states and travel with little baggage.
New York beat Philadelphia 3 to 2 in a morning game. Lavender allowed no balls until the eighth inning, issued two walks, Burns delivered a single, and Burns scored the winning run after Bancroft fumbled Zimmerman's grounder. Rudolph had the edge over Coombs in a Boston morning game. Boston defeated Brooklyn 9 to 0 with a four run fourth inning where Rawlings drove in three on a single. In the eighth Rawlings singled after Smith doubled and Olson nabbed Rawlings on a double steal attempt.
Chicago defeated Pittsburgh 6 to 5 in a morning game on May 30. Thirty players used in a drawn out affair with Hendrix Baldridge Prendergast Douglas Demaree Wilson Cooper Grimes Jacobs Fischer contributing for Chicago. Pittsburgh lineup included pitchers and fielders noted in the score details.
Boston won 4 to 3 over Washington this morning after three singles loaded the bases and the tying run stood on second with one out. Shore started for Boston and Bader finished, securing the victory as Agnew hit for Boston. Bowen earned a close win for New York, 6 to 0, over Philadelphia after scoring early on timely hits and errors. Cullop threw five solid innings for Philadelphia, while Alexander left the game after a foul tip.
Associated Press reports the Chicago Louis game was postponed with one game slated for this afternoon at three oclock.
Fisher Brooks charged as principal in the killing of Mrs. Julia May Hess faces disputed alibi from night porter Wesley Spear at the St Andrew hotel. The state plans grand jury evidence and a key witness report of a car with two men and a woman near the crime scene.
The murdered Mrs. R. Co. Hess was found Thursday morning near Chickasabkue, triggering widespread outrage and police inquiries. Letters from Marsha Texas Charleston D C Dallas Fort Worth and other cities show many women reported missing. Texas detective R P Bass urged harsher measures, claiming he could force information from suspects Fisher and Mary Brooks if jailed with them.
The traffic bureau of the Chamber of Commerce reports the export free time hearing in New Orleans is moved from June 1 to December 1. Mobile Pensacola and New Orleans ports watch closely as officials weigh reducing free time on loaded export cars from ten to five days. If not decided by tomorrow, the current ten days free time remains in effect until December 1.

An American from Mobile reported in a German prison is identified as James Summers of 26 Church Street. Charles Nelson, a local shipping mate, says Summers, a former first mate who worked with cotton and timber, has long sailed from Mobile to the continent and lived on Church Street between Water and Committee streets. Summers is listed in Nelsons book.
Two regular army recruits left for Birmingham for examination and assignment. Jesse B. Emmons of Andalusia Alabama and Buford C. Walters of Ovett Mississippi enlisted in the First Alabama Infantry Tuesday. Seventeen were accepted at the camp recruiting station, eight more through the Dauphin Street branch.
Memorial Day was observed in Mobile with public institutions and many businesses closing for the day. Banks cotton exchange post office and government offices shut. Ceremonies at the National Cemetery were conducted by the Colonial Association with Col. F. M. Maddox and staff taking part.
From Petrograd in May 80 the congress of delegates of the front appeals for immediate provision of munitions and fighting tools. It condemns adventurers and urges rally around the council of soldiers and workmen’s delegates, warning that without supplies the front cannot stand.
Rome reports Italian gains near Trieste with lines extended west of Medeazzo. Artillery heavy in Carnia and on Mount Cucco to Mount Vodice east of Gorizia. Three enemy trench assaults on Hill 652 repulsed. about 300 prisoners taken. Carso fortifications reinforced. Boscomale assault stopped by our batteries. Local actions west of Medeazza continue.
War office report from London dated May 30 states hostile raiding parties were repulsed last night in the Fontaine-lez-Croiselles area and west of Lens. Patrols near Neuve Chapelle penetrated enemy trenches and inflicted casualties. no other notable events reported.
The News-Item acknowledges receipt of the invitation to attend the mental field day exercises tomorrow. Captain Leon Sei, acting as quartermaster, delivered the message on behalf of the commanding officer and staff.
In Washington the establishment of a number of branch locations is proposed as amendments to the act move through Congress. The first branch ban would be located near Louisville and Denver, with details pending approval.
