The city commission introduced an ordinance to make Dauphin Street one way west of Dearborn to Commerce with north side stoppages facing east. The measure, tabled to next meeting, also covered trash removal rules and bond interest allocations. Several petitions and requests were referred or postponed.
German forces push across the Aisne river between Vailly and Berry au Bac after seizing the Chemin des Dames ridge. The offensive widens to about twenty miles with aims toward the Vesle as battle rages along the entire Aisne front and French defenses resist intense pressure.
Six carloads of cabbage have been shipped from Mobile to army cantonments over the past week with two cars per week for Camp Gordon Camp Jack son and Camp Shelby. E B Davis said the army camps have taken two cars each and another five cars are planned, as farmers statewide stock about 200 carloads for disposal if a market is found. He also anticipated a large potato order soon.
Subscriptions to the Red Cross fund continue to come in to Mobile's executive committee. It is believed the reports will show Mobile's quota near 122000. Officials report no large subscriptions today but expect additional sums within the next day or two.
Three new members joined the U S Stamp Club, received today by Postmaster J Blocker Thornton at the Mobile post office. The club subscribes toTimist services approved by the Treasury Department.
General Pershing reports that American lines repelled a German gas attack in Picardy after a heavy bombardment. Two front sections were penetrated, counterattacks reclaimed trenches, and casualties were light. Additional raids in the Woevre and Lorraine were repulsed as gas shells renewed fighting.
On the French front May 27 American forces repelled three German raiding parties penetrating to 200 yards beyond the first line. A counterattack drove the enemy back, while a bombardment targeted rear hospitals causing no injuries. Funerals were held nearby as shells fell in the vicinity.
Real estate man E M Bailey reports two land sales totaling 79 000. One near Chickasaw Plant west of the Chickasabogue tract sold for 64 000 to Leon Selomion of Louisville. The other on St Joseph Street, north of the new post office, sold for 15 000 to G E Redfield of Chicago from the estate of Mrs L J Rawls.
Theresa Schaffer and A. T. Watson were discharged by the recorder Tuesday for lack of evidence in violating the prohibitions law. A key witness failed to positively prove sales, and the Watson residence was searched following a citizen's complaint.
Report details altercation Monday night in Prichard between Ben Saranthus a carpenter and Jim Fallon a junk dealer over chickens. Witnesses say a revolver and a stick were used. Both men faced affray charges with other men involved, and Saranthus reportedly struck twice amid the confrontation.
