Newell Fined for Assault After Crossing Fight
Gus Newell a former deputy sheriff was fined 25 dollars and costs of 20 days hard labor in each of two assault and battery cases by Judge N R Clarke. Tom Bennett testified Newell stopped his car at Springhill avenue and Bay Shore road May 1, cursed them beat them bit him pulled hair and removed officer badge and pistol. Paul Cazalas testified Newell threatened to kill him and followed to Brown and White drug store where he cut him struck him with his fist and cursed him. Witnesses supported the assault on Cazalas. Newell said he fought with brick and fists to defend himself and denied drinking. He stated he did not have trouble with Deputy Barber after the incident and had refused to go to jail.
