Police hunt four unidentified gunmen after they fired on Glenn Young a K K K raider and his wife on the Atlantic Pacific highway west of Okawville Illinois. Young and his wife were wounded but survived as bullets pierced his car and Mrs Young was hit in the face. Young says he has faced prior ambush attempts and often carries a weapon.
Senate agricultural chair Norris says he faced a blackmail plot linked to his opposition to Henry Ford's Muscle Shoals offer. Mrs E A Edmundson of Decatur Alabama testified that Norris promised support for Ford in exchange for a kiss during a committee inspection trip. The hearing was interrupted as Norris pressed for explanations while Edmundson claimed no harm.
Sheriff Paul Cazalas announces the resignation of Deputy Sire George L Donaghue Walter Blackman and John H Moore following a joint conspiracy trial in federal court. Donaghue convicted, Blackman and Moore acquitted. two sheriff aides Li am H Holcombe Jr and Hudoff also implicated.
At Colorado Springs the strength of Governor W M Sweet is tested as the Democratic state convention opens with a battle against a coalition faction. Julius Aichele of Denver leads the principal opposition for delegate at large. Aides speculate that Aichele may bow out to back Philip Hornbein, a former state chairman, as the race evolves.
Paris May 24 The 80th birthday tribute to Anatole France drew vast academic and literary figures to the Trocedero great hall. A reluctant France appeared as students and writers paid homage with Bodoun theater excerpts from his works and a Thais musical program noting the celebrated author’s long career.
Berlin reports a novelty in stockings made from ultra fine thread. One pound of silk would require 279 miles of this thread to produce. Dealers acknowledge wear tests show toes and heels likely wear out after a single dance to modern jazz music.
Leningrad May 24. After 27 hours of deliberation the supreme court condemned 17 former judges court officials lawyers and others connected with economic policy to death on charges of corruption and bribery.

A two family house fire in Canton Mass kills Mrs Anginetta d Amateio and six of her children. Four Leclaire children also perish. The cause is unknown. Vincenzo d Amateio and one child are rescued by a patrolman.
Grand Rapids May 24 The Presbyterian general assembly opened with expectations of debate over the initial report from the committee on bills and overtures. Attention centered on the proposed minister pension plan from the special lay committee led by Will Hays and on overtures about Dr Harry Em.
Ten thousand children gathered at Lenin's tomb in Moscow to pledge support for Soviet principles. Premier RyKoff, Trotsky, M. Kananoff, and Bukharin urged emulation of Lenin and helping elders extend the revolution globally. Trotsky lauded renaming the group Leninite Pioneers, calling for world brotherhood.
Mayor Hy lan ordered Commissioner Hirschfield to investigate Abbey Rockefeller daughter of John D. Rockefeller Jr. after she received a suspended sentence for speeding 29 mph in her second offense. Protests allege partiality in motor law enforcement due to her status as a millionaire's daughter.
Rome May 24 The new Italian parliament opened in state with King Victor Emmanuel and royal family attending from the throne. The king recalled the ninth anniversary of Italy’s entry into the war and described the annexation of Fiume as a decisive foreign policy move to assure Italy a rightful place among nations.
In St Clairsville Ohio on May 24 J T Beckett Barnesville chiropractor is held without bond on a first degree murder charge. He allegedly allowed his six year old stepson Bernard Mason to eat poison pills from Beckett's pocket thinking they were candy. The child died Tuesday. The father Glen Mason died two years ago in a fall from a telephone pole at Bethesda leaving property tied up until the boy came of age.
Chicago May 23 Thomas Lev ieh publisher of The Flapper and Experience two monthly magazines printed here was indicted by the federal grand jury today on a charge of sending obscene matter through the mails. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
A French corporal was killed and two soldiers wounded in an attack near a Turkish-Syrian observation post on May 16. The incident occurred as French and allied forces faced hostile bands in the Beiruit area.
Chicago reported snowfall in outlying sections with temperatures dropping about 20 degrees yesterday. Cooler weather was forecast for today.
Atlantic City May 24 George H Carter public printer described startling conditions in the Washington Government Printing Office. He said a ring of race track touts and handbook makers operated nationwide within the office with results wired by a government employee, and that workers including men and women bet more than $1000 daily.
In a police court hearing the June shooting of Douglas Brandon reappeared as Brandon, charged with disorderly conduct, arraigned against Esther Gray who is also his complainant. Brandon’s case was postponed to next Tuesday amid details of a troubled history and hospital treatment for Brandon.
Myron Sprague of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce says merchants expect about 400000 in payments and cash purchases during the semi annual trade and pay-up week. Stores stay open tonight until 8 or some until 10 as the event nears completion. The program, begun years ago, has shown repeated success.
Four horses are entered for the Grainger Memorial handicap at Churchill Downs. The $10,000-added race for three-year-olds and up runs a mile and a quarter on a likely sloppy track. Opponents prepared measures including a plan for a 200 million dollar surplus sales corporation abroad. Debate ended yesterday and a vote on the bill as a whole was not expected today, likely delaying action into next week.

Dayton pilots Lieutenant Alex Parson and navigation engineer Bradley Jones flew from Dayton at 7 a.m. in a mechanically guided plane bound for Birmingham Alabama. The instrument guided flight passed Cincinnati and Frankfort with plans to reach Birmingham for lunch and an aerial carnival before returning to McCook Field on Sunday.
Madrid May 24 Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks will be presented to King Alfonso and Queen Victoria tomorrow upon their return to Madrid from a tour of Andalusia and Toledo. A series of entertainments has been arranged in their honor by local hosts and organizers.
