The city commission adopted a resolution at a special session to introduce an ordinance for the 26th paving venture. The plan aims to fast start a $2,500,000 street improvement project with public hearings before contracts are awarded. Final award decision will occur after the ordinance action. The venture covers nearly 30 miles across all city sections.

A 23 year old girl shot at a would be robber in East Chicago Indiana after he tried to hold up a store. The assailant fled but was later traced to a steel mill plant in Chicago where authorities pursued him. The pistol jammed as the suspect, Leroy Covington, was recaptured.
The sheriff said jail conditions fail to care for the insane who must be removed to asylums. He described non padded cells causing self harm and said jailors aided by volunteers often use force, urging improvements.
The county highway maintenance department spent 15 808.88 in April, under the 16 500 allowance. The report excludes paving work funded by a 5 000 000 bond issue recently ratified. Chairman Arthur D. Davis said roads are in better condition and that operations should stay within appropriation.

From a field of 25 hopefuls, Miss Fleeta Doyle was selected by Biloxi News to represent Biloxi at the international bathing pageant in Galveston Texas on June 25. Doyle will ride the same official trains as Miss Louisiana and Miss Mississippi, who will also hail from the coast.
Four masked bandits armed with shotguns robbed six men at a Hammond hotel poker game. They took $3,000 to $4,000, a $1,000 diamond and three watches, then fled toward New Orleans. Victims included residents of Baton Rouge and Hammond, with two Mississippi men contributing small sums.
A special mission of French aeronautical experts arrived aboard the liner France in New York. They announce plans for Lieutenant Commander Louis Jerome Paris to attempt a Brest to New York flight after May 25 via the Azores with a possible Bermuda stop. The French naval craft will have two 500 horsepower motors and will be accompanied by two others.
Bernard R. Armour, president of Heyden Chemical, states the company has bought no phosgene from Stolzenberg for more than a year. Heyden has plants in Garfield and Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and consumes only three to four tons annually in product production.
In Prichard a mother and one child are dead and three others orphaned after Golema, husband to the mother, shot his wife then killed himself. Z W Goleman, a brother in law, offered no motive for the killings during the Mobile and Ohio Whistler shop outing.
At the Democratic state convention in Beaumont Texas last night facetious remarks about feminine styles helped unseat a delegation after a long session dominated by prohibition Klan and other issues. P C Sarders of Palo Pinto County had secured seating through the state executive committee and credentials committee, while Rev W F Nelson challenged him but was interrupted by hecklers. The platform storm by Harris county women sealed Sanders fate as he refused to apologize and was escorted out. The Nelson faction was seated as ultra dry.
AP reports 236 miners lost in four accidents since Saturday. In Harlan Kentucky an explosion killed two and left six missing at a coal mine. Kimberly Nevada saw a copper mine cave in with four dead. Mather Pennsylvania continued recovery efforts as 164 bodies found and 33 men still missing, 152 identified, seven unlocated.
The initial issue of the Ryan Review quarterly publication edited by Mobile high school students is out. It features essays poetry and fiction written by pupils and is sponsored by the high school Writers Guild.
P Combel of 812 New Jersey street was fined 25 dollars and 25 days costs for possession of a slot machine, paid in full. H H Van Aller of 250 Stockin street faced 19 dollars and 10 days costs for possessing punch boards amid complaints of minors playing them in a store run by the defendant.
Volunteers of America aims to raise 2000 to fund a state home in Montgomery for needy people. Local rep H F Wilkins notes the group has aided 19 000 individuals across Alabama in 15 years and plans a Mobile facility for homeless children in the near future.

In Kansas City on May 23 the quadrennial general conference of the Methodist Episcopal church adopted a resolution declaring that the church agencies shall not be used in preparation for war. The measure, supported by nearly two thirds of the 800 delegates, states agencies shall be used in preparation for peace.
The body of Joseph M. Harris a broker and member of the Illinois Athletic Club and the Friars Club New York was recovered from Lake Michigan near the municipal pier. The death bore no marks of violence and Harris had been living at a hotel about six months prior.
Montgomery reports rumblings within the Democratic executive committee as it prepares a resolution to censure or exclude party members who refuse to back the nominees in the general election. A caucus will decide whether to present the measure before the formal session Thursday.
The Opel rocket car powered by rear rockets was tested on the Avus speedway in Berlin on May 23. Fritz Von Opel drove the vehicle, with speeds estimated around 100 miles an hour during the demonstration.

Thirty seven people were sentenced to three to twelve years penal servitude for conspiring to detach eastern districts from Poland and unite with Soviet Russia as an autonomous region. During verdict reading some sang the Ruthenian national song. Four of the convicted were deputies and given twelve years each. Nineteen of the fifty six on trial were acquitted.
Kinney, a mechanic from Sussex, died when he flew solo in an old monoplane after lessons. The craft nosedived from about 500 feet. Kinney leaves a widow and children.

A German fighter aircraft crashed yesterday afternoon, injuring the pilot and killing the passenger. The crash occurred near the airfield with rescuers rushing both men to a hospital for treatment.
