May 23. W. W. Abet, accused of fraud in spiritualism, attempted a late demonstration in court to materialize a spirit but gave up after hours, saying the atmosphere was not harmonious enough for a test.
New Mexico faces a transition as Soledad C. Chacone acts as governor while Governor James F. Hinkle attends the Democratic convention. The report notes the first woman to hold gubernatorial power in an American state and outlines the procedural steps for rehearing and ongoing legal cases in the territory.
In Montpelier on May 23 the Vermont Republican state convention gathered to select a solid delegation to the national convention pledged to President Coolidge. The gathering marks a staged vote by party delegates from the Green Mountain State.

In Shenandoah Virginia a race riot erupted after a fight between a tree team and Clement Escue. Emil Escue and his companions were pursued by armed white men who fired on them in woods. The three negroes returned fire initiating a running gun battle. Posses chased the fleeing group as authorities reported injuries and intensified pursuit.
The Cunard liner Mauretania tested off the Isle of Wight after reblading turbines and beat its 1911 speed record. On a 28 mile course, she averaged 26.4 knots with a tidal run, while reaching 31 knots with the tide, hailed by officials as the fastest speed by a merchant ship.
Senator Walsh of Massachusetts proposed an amendment to replace the four day old bonus law with cash payments on the current per diem basis. He estimated the change would save the government about one million dollars if approved.
Miss Mary Hollins of Westbrook Louisiana led by 7 up on Mrs J L Anderson at Cherry Valley Club Garden City New York after the first 18 holes in the final 36 hole match of the Women's Metropolitan Golf Association tournament.
Beatrice Nebraska May 22. There will be no second primary to reconfirm Norris as Republican U S Senate nominee. Senator Norris letter to Harry Eener prompted the statement by Republican state chairman Dr Sackett announcing the decision tonight.
H. Huffer Jr resigns as commander of Paris Post No. 1 American Legion. He states he cannot uphold national headquarters policies after the bonus bill passed despite President Coolidge veto.
William Ford was found guilty of first degree murder by a Brooklyn Supreme Court jury. Justice Faber set the sentencing for May 28.
London May 23. Sir Harry Lauder, famed comedian, says he has been asked to run for parliament but lacks the freedom to devote to duties. He plans to stand for election in the House of Commons after completing his farewell tour next autumn.
Posses search woods for the slaver of Miss Louise Gerrish 19 Amherst village schoolteacher whose body lay buried in a pasture shallow grave. She left her boarding place Wednesday to go to the post office and did not return. Seven buckshot wounds were found in her breast and her watch and ring were missing. The grave was found yesterday.
In broad daylight Nellie Taylor an 18 year old English girl was abducted before the home of her aunt. Three men shoved her into a car and fled. Uncle Arthur Rennick could not provide clues to the perpetrators or their motive.
Los Angeles May 23. The United States is choked with excess gold and a large portion of the surplus could be loaned to other nations. John E. Barber acted as assistant to the interallied committee of experts on separations.
In Nashville May 23 the Tennessee Democratic convention voted 1300 to 743 to instruct the state delegation to support W. G. McAdoo at the national convention, with 24 votes. Shelby County later gave 160 votes to McAdoo shifting the tide. A disrupted session required police reserves as Matt Stewart spoke causing bedlam before roll call. The convention adopted the pro McAdoo resolutions and Governor An Pony pledged support to back the slate.

Argentine amateur radio operators during tests heard signals from North American stations N1XZ IABE 41Z 1BQ 8ADL SBPA 9UA 302 and 46WJK. Transmission from a station was received on 120 and 180 meter wavelengths. BS worked New Zealand station 2AQ for two hours, a possible record.
London May 4 Labor's government faced a parliamentary clash over unemployment policy. Opponents moved to reduce Labor Minister Tom Shaw's salary by 199 pounds, but the motion was talked out last night as the administration claimed calmer waters ahead.
Huntsville Texas May 23 Francisco Cadena convicted for the slaying of his sister in law Pablita Jumeniz at San Antonio was electrocuted at the state penitentiary early today. It was the second execution in two days as Harle Humphreys a Negro was executed yesterday morning for the slaying of Lee Frazier on January 13 1923 in Falls county.
Preliminary track and field events for the Missouri Valley Conference meet are scheduled at Memorial Stadium, University of Nebraska, Lincoln. A field events prelims and a special 264-athlete program run today with finals set for Saturday. A match race between Jose Ray and Ray Watson is planned for tomorrow.
New York May 22 The Interastleigh Rapid Transit Company has adopted a mechanical slot machine that changes in dimes quarters and half dollars to replace the 1 290 persons now occupying photo booths at the entrance to New York subways.
Ed Finnegan, who had just returned from the Flat Top mines after a prior burglary term, was held to the grand jury on another burglary charge following a recorder's court trial. RK. E. Eastburn testified that a coat, stickpin and manicure set were stolen from his rooms on May 16.
The Weather Bureau issued a forecast for Saturday showers with slightly warmer conditions. The low temperature last night was sixty degrees.
Mexico City May 23 oil export duties continue to be deposited with the National Bank to finance the foreign debt payments, per the finance ministry, discounting rumors that duties were diverted to other uses. About half a million pesos were recognized.
Mrs. Nicolich died at her son Gua Dade's home in Baldwin County after a long illness. She celebrated her ninety fourth birthday recently with a large county event and songs from her youth. Survived by children and many descendants, burial is set for Point Clear Cemetery.
Dan Borden, 18, held at the county jail on a charge of reckless driving after an accident at Spring Hill Avenue and Ann Street that seriously injured 8 year old Austin Lott of 1257 Springill Avenue. Charley Horn, 27, is held as a material witness. The child was taken to Mobile Infirmary then returned home.
A railroad proposal to grant Mobile the same rate as Jacksonville on dried fruits from the Pacific coast, shipped to Atlanta and nearby points, has been approved by the rate-making body. The Southern Railway also agrees to publish the same rate on chairs from Chattanooga to Mobile via New Orleans, with Mobile previously paying a higher rate.
The Fairhope Single Tax Colony invites bids for a steel concrete bridge on Bayview avenue crossing the eastern shore gully known as Rayon Chahorn. The new bridge will have an artistic design blending with the scenery, replacing the present wooden structure over the big gully.
E Levene of 300 Sout street was held to a $750 bond on a larceny charge involving Joseph McNamara as complainant. Police say Levene entered a room at Namara's house, stole a horsehoe pin set, a diamond pin, and other jewelry, with the case tied to a prior investigation and ongoing court hearings.
The commission held a hearing on a petition to convert a section of Cemetery Street into a public street linking W Bayou Street. Local civic groups and cemetery property owners, including Mrs Hortense Batre Amelia Abbott and J N McAleer, advocated delaying removal of graves while planning the street project.
