The State Federation of Labor meeting in Mobile shows rapid growth from 1,500 organized labor men eighteen months ago to between 8,500 and 9,000 today. Mobile locals rise from eighteen to 53, delegates from 11 to 106, indicating record industry and labor expansion in Mobile.
More than 400 delegates and labor group members from across Alabama attend the Alabama Federation of Labor eighteenth annual convention at the Labor Temple. Mobile and Florence join in securing state headquarters, with P. Gibson DeWitt and Lewis Bowen discussed for secretary treasurer and president respectively, as the event runs through Wednesday.
The Salvation Army launched its home service fund drive in Mobile as shipyard visits began. Fifty teams will canvass downtown Wednesday from 9 to 12 while Women’s War Service covers residential areas. A noted stunt involves T N Cook climbing the First National Bank building at 6:30 PM, drawing spectators with no contributions asked.
Fifty teams mostly veterans will not start work until Wednesday with a luncheon at the Cawthon Hotel on Tuesday and a 9 o clock Wednesday briefing. Lieut William Bricen of the Prince's Pat Canadian regiment is set to address the local committee.
The Mobile Police Relief Association re-elected all officers at its annual meeting held Sunday at police headquarters. Lutz as financial secretary and Delahunty as treasurer were re-elected for the tenth consecutive time, with Cornickes Harris and others also returned to their posts.
With thirty one churches reporting out of seventy four the Methodist Centenary drive in the Mobile district is significantly oversubscribed. The district quota stood at 9393 92550 but early totals show 120 910 50 subscribed nearly 30 000 above goal and forty three churches remain to report.
The Calvert church led a Sunday drive to fund a local appeal. The Government Street church reached $34,387.25 on a $12,100 quota while St. James Street and others also surpassed or approached their targets. Total subscriptions across eight area churches exceeded several set quotas.
The Associated Press wins a perpetual injunction in U S District Court against the International News Service to stop taking AP news from members newspapers and using or selling it. The decree continues a prior restraining order granted July 7 1917 and bar the INS its officers and employees from appropriating AP material.
A Moscow wireless dispatch reported by Associated Press says a state of war exists between Russia and Romania after Romania ignored a Russian ultimatum demanding evacuation of Bessarabia. The message notes fighting near Tiraspol and Bender on the Dniester River, northwest of Odessa.
Unionized operators of the Southern Bell Telephone Company strike in Jacksonville Florida demanding reinstatement of 3 percent of members discharged Saturday for alleged in ing walkout. About a dozen operators joined the first walkout and the number was expected to grow as shifts change.
Formal notice of a contest to the election of Truman H. Newberry, Republican senator-elect from Michigan, was entered today in the Senate. The petition seeks an investigation of alleged campaign expenses and irregularities connected with his victory.
Miss Jane Addams reads President Wilson's Paris reply on modifying peace terms at the Zurich conference. Wilson says the appeal touches both intellect and heart and hopes means to comply can be found despite immense practical difficulties.
Washington May 19 Promptly at noon the extraordinary session of congress opened with Republicans in the majority in both chambers. The program, advance and detailed, moved ahead with Vice President Marshall presiding in the senate and Clerk South Trimble in the house. The day included prayers, readings of Wilsons proclamation, and rolls. The house elected Representative Frederick H. Gillett of Massachusetts as speaker, defeating Champ Clark, while the senate chose Senator Cummins of Iowa as president pro tempore. The session also addressed women suffrage on the house calendar and prepared for President Wilsons message delivery. The Austrian peace delegates submitted credentials during a brief 3:20 PM session lasting four minutes at St Germain en Laye. The German delegation, led by Count Brockdorff-Rantzau, returned to Berlin with plenipotentiaries and military experts. Paderewski is expected in Paris Thursday amid Poland crisis talk. President Ebert condemned the peace terms as unacceptable and vowed Germany would not sign.
Mobile county officials and citizens pressed for upgrading Telegraph road toward Chickasaw. Board of Revenue members considered a proposed cooperation with Mobile to fund improvements and endorsed a statewide patrol road system once local roads are repaired. Citizens led by D P Bestor Jr James Maury and L Irvine urged resurfacing Spring road and urged county share of costs.
An organizing meeting will be held tonight at the Circle Club calling all ex service men to attend. Rev. John W. Inger of Mobile will report on the Alabama delegation to the recent national convention in Bt. Lewis.
Frank W. Crenshaw, chief welfare officer of the Agency Fleet Corporation, stationed at Redacota, Fla., is in Mobile on a short visit to relatives. He is noted as a former chief friend of police in the city.
Captain W. A. Sirmon, Mobilian, is believed to be with the 225th Infantry of the 24th division that landed in New York aboard the Antoine. Sirmon fought in the Meuse Argonne and at Chateau Thierry, and his regiment now consists largely of replacements.
Twelve year old Cliftion Long of Scott and Selma streets was injured Sunday afternoon after a motorcycle struck him at the Texas and Scott streets intersection. The rider was identified as HL Foster in the report.
In London at 5 PM the Sopwith Airplane Company manager received word Av Hawker was 150 miles off Ireland at 4 PM today. In Washington the NC-3 was located near Ponta del Gada under its own power after being missing since 5:15 AM Saturday. Commander J Towers led NC-3 on the mid Atlantic search toward land seven miles from shore. Rear Admiral Jackson reported the update from Ponta del Gada.
Word that Harry G Hawker was approaching the Irish coast on his flight from Newfoundland drew instant tribute from naval officers. An official statement of admiration by the American navy is expected when the aircraft reaches its destination.
Lt Cmdr P N L Bellenger of Cheraw describes the NC-1 crash after fog near Station 18. The crew survived five hours in the water aboard the Ionica after abandoning the wrecked aircraft. The NC-4 prepared for a test flight to Port Delgada that afternoon.
A report on the Mobile & Railroad street car finances is due at the regular meeting of the lighting commission Tuesday. Commissioner Lyons said the examiner hired over ten days ago would present findings, and the panel declined to state their stance on a fare increase.
The War Risk Insurance Bureau names R A Cholmeley Jones as director to replace Colonel Henry J D Lindsley who resigned after clashing with Secretary Glass. The move follows accusations of treasury restraints and a predicted shakeup affecting claimant support for soldiers and dependents.
An unofficial report to the American navy states an aircraft believed to be Hawker was sighted off Ireland or near the coast. London map shops show a chart marking the sighting but there is no independent confirmation.

Reports from St Johns Newfoundland dated May 19 show no word by 7:30 A M New York time on the Atlantic nonstop flight of Hawker and crew in Sopwith Jane. Weather and mid ocean conditions were being checked by chasing vessels as the daring attempt to beat Yankee aviators continues.

Manuel McGinity age 17 pleaded guilty to burglarizing homes of R Parker and H Parker in Chickasaw. He was tried in the criminal court Monday and held to the circuit court for further proceedings.
