The conference of the legislative delegation and city commission will meet Saturday morning to study the refinancing bill drafted by William H. Armbrecht. No action will be taken then, but later discussions aim to align concepts and strengthen the bill for further review amid evolving financing plans.
The Southern Traffic League and Regional Shippers Board plan meetings in Mobile in early June. W. and Creighton of Charlotte preside. M. M. Caskie of Montgomery serves as executive secretary. About 600 shippers and railroad men expected. sessions span June 8 to 10 with arrivals and long city stays.
Lloyd Bertaud and Charles Levine clash over prize split and flight terms amid weather delays and plans to depart after Byrd and Lindbergh. Disputes on radio gear and route spark legal threats as pilot Acosta, fresh from endurance record, joins the effort.

Funeral services for Judge Samuel B. Browne a longtime circuit judge and attorney in Mobile and Baldwin counties were held at Roche Memorial and St Patrick s Catholic Church. Rev Father James F Byrnes officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Pallbearers included S H Smith R M Smith George J Sullivan William A Conrad Judge Price Williams Jacob D Bloch. honorary pallbearers included several Mobile judges and others from the Raphael Semmes United Confederate Veterans of which Browne was a member.
The Girls Detention home board asks for a summer term with Mrs Wakeford as teacher and names a committee to work with the school board. A portable building on Cherokee street is proposed for classes. Superintendent Miss Hazel Bulger and the board stress the need for better instruction and drainage at the home.
Mobile county farmers reported a larger variety of produce on the second market day. Twenty seven trucks were loaded as buyers arrived steadily at the market on North Broad street. The curb market operates Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays from seven to eleven in the morning.
The annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary to the County Tuberculosis Association is scheduled for 7 30 Friday evening at the Cawthon. Mrs A D Hanan president of the auxiliary announced the group will handle monthly expense maintenance for the tuberculosis sanatorium at Cottage Hill.
May 17 weather bulletin notes fair conditions in Florida with slight warming along the east coast and extreme north, gentle winds shifting to east or south. Southern Alabama shows partly cloudy skies and a mild warming trend with winds shifting from gentle to moderate southward.
Bainbridge Colby former secretary of state and Wilson ally is reported to seek a divorce in Paris from Nathalie Sedgwick Colby his wife since 1895. The Stockbridge Massachusetts native is pictured above as proceedings are pursued.
A city wide water safety campaign organized by the Rotary Club and the city recreation department will launch Thursday with school demonstrations across Clark Semmes Old Shell Road Woodcock Leinkauf and other schools. Public water demonstrations at Lyons Park and Spring Hill College lake run Friday with open competition for those over 15.
Mayor Hartwell authorized to sign a contract with E. J. Clayton of British Columbia to operate the Automobile tourist camp on Cedar Point road with a $10,000 minimum in buildings and improvements. Clayton may charge a user fee and will pay $1 monthly rent to the city. The deal follows Mobile County Automobile Club action and will support filling stations at several locations.
Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Toolen arrives from Baltimore to assume leadership of the Mobile diocese. A 9 o clock installation at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will be followed by a luncheon, city tour, and a 7 30 reception at Knights of Columbus headquarters. Archibishop Shaw presides with laity and clergy in attendance.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Aerdeen Wade returned from Pensacola where he testified in a federal narcotics case. Wade had previously supervised the Mobile county office and led the federal narcotics division for south Alabama and north Florida.
A May 17 report describes a sputtering ball of fire venting from the clouds and exploding near the General Hospital in south Kansas City. Eyewitnesses report sonic booms and a bright flash, with no confirmed meteor debris found.
Gacree E Powell Jr vice president and secretary of the Discount Corporation of California and Magic Pike 24 a stenographer were found shot to death in an automobile in front of the girl’s residence. Police surmise Miss Pike shot Powell and then killed herself. The bodies were found by a taxicab driver after residents heard two shots late last night.
A four day Arts and Handcraft show from the city recreation department opens at 2 30 tomorrow at the Green Lantern on St Joseph Street. Grace Zelnicker directs 1200 children in toy making weaving purses and more with open house for friends Thursday. Marionette theatre presents Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy and summer tours to playgrounds will train children to operate dolls.
Mobile forecast issued this morning predicts fair skies and warmer temperatures tonight and tomorrow. Meteorologist Albert Ashhenberger reports the easing trend continues for Mobile and vicinity.
Mrs. I Hystad asked the police to search for Ole Hystad 38 who vanished from his home at northwest Williame and Ben ator streets Government street loop district last night. No clue had been found by noon. He left about 730 PM to purchase something and was seen last at that time. Hystad is described as blonde with blue eyes and a sailing vessel tattoo on one arm and the American flag on the other.
Booneville Ark May 17 The Rev W B Hays presiding elder of the Booneville district of the Methodist Episcopal church was killed and the Rev Fee Davidson state superintendent of Sunday schools was injured in an automobile accident two miles east of here early today They were en route to Plainview for a district Sunday school meeting
Reported sighting places a plane believed to be Francesco De Pinedo over Lake Erie between Toledo and Vermilion as he steered a direct course from Cleveland toward Montreal. Observers tracked the craft along the lake with a possible 11 26 a m crossing.
Detroit observers dispatched three planes from Ford airport soon after 10 oclock to locate Commander Francesco De Pinedo whose Santa Maria II failed to arrive as scheduled from Chicago en route to Montreal. Reports placed the craft near St Joseph Jackson Monroe and heading toward Lake Erie with no confirmed sighting.
Mrs Virla Kim sues evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson and her mother Mrs Kennedy for one million dollars alleging defamation. The suit claims McPherson named Kim as the Carmel cottage resident tied to the disappearance inquiry. A demurrer to the original complaint was heard earlier.
Estate fire marshal M Straiton visits with Sheriff Pat Byrne and deputies regarding a house fire ten days past near Semmes. Robert Lowery, Hudson Howell’s brother in law, is arrested on second degree arson warrant issued by Howell. His Inferior Criminal Court hearing is postponed.
Thomas Jefferies died on land at 72 and requested burial at sea ten miles southeast of Mobile Light. His body, placed in a white sheet without a coffin, was transported by tug Nimrod with Rev. W. Lockler aboard, then lowered into the Gulf after a brief burial rite. He loved the sea and desired to join sailors beneath the waves.
After a week of search and rumors the world learns little more about Captain Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli who failed to reach New York on the non stop flight from Paris. The Newfoundland coast remains under watch as crews seek any trace of the White Bird and its fliers. A London report claimed a German steamer found a French plane in the North sea but the committee says the markings differ from the White Bird.
The governor discussed with firearm experts the possibility of testing Sacco’s pistol to confirm if the Berardelli murder bullet came from Sacco’s gun. The move follows conflicting evidence on the weapon’s role in the Braintree payroll holdup seven years earlier. No date given for a pardon decision or full trial investigation.
A five gallon keg of white whiskey and 90 half pints of the same liquor were unearthed in a trap in a vacant building at Water and Fislava streets. William Davis, 18, was arrested on the prohibition violation. Deputies Barber Riley A Stringfellow and Federal Officer took part in the raid. Davis will also face federal dry law charges. Six half pints were found in a trap near Joachim and Lipscombe streets. L. W. Brazley, arrested for violating the prohibition law, was fined $50 or 59 days in recorder’s court.
Mobile Community Chest executive committee will meet at 11:20 Wednesday morning at the Chamber of Commerce to act on the petition of a new home service agency to be admitted to the chest and to receive funds for its activities. The agency will handle family and case work and was recently organized. Other chest operation matters likely to be discussed.
A Ford sedan stolen April 13 from KE. M. Malone of 809 Charleston Street was found abandoned in Parkin Arkansas by Parkin city marshal E. D. Atkins. A second car stolen from Prichard by R. L. McCoy was recovered in North Carolina and Washington avenues by deputy sheriffs with no damage evident.
On motion of Mayor Hartwell the Mobile city commission adopted a resolution asking the state legislature to consider a pension plan for city employees with 20 years of service, retiring veterans at 50 percent of salary for life, and extending to current municipal workers.
Flooding in Plancheville and surrounding bayous claims about 20 lives and endangers residents east of Opelousas. Red Cross warns evacuations are urgent as waters rise, with boats likely unable to reach stranded families in narrow low-lying areas.
