Funeral services for Joseph H. Choate former ambassador to Great Britain will be held at 9 30 tomorrow morning at St Bartholomew's Protestant church in New York. Burial will follow at Bridge Massachusetts where he kept a summer home for many years.
Washington May 16 The Senate began debate on a 3 390 946 000 war budget and then recessed into executive session to discuss confidential information on prosecuting the war. The House also pressed ahead, detailing increases for army navy and the shipping board to build a merchant fleet. Senators Weeks and Martin urged secrecy while Baker urged keeping internal discussions confidential. The session opened with allocations for the National Defense Council and for starting a merchant fleet construction program.
Will Jackson a negro, wanted on warrants for auto larceny and resisting arrest, was shot by Deputy Sheriff B P Murray Tuesday night as he allegedly rushed at the deputy. Jackson was taken to city hospital in critical condition. officials stated he could not recover. Deputies Murray and Carter went to arrest him at a beach near Morgan accompanied by W H Holcombe. the shooting occurred when Jackson allegedly threatened them. The warrant was sworn by J W Wood.
The State Normal School at Daphne will hold graduation exercises on Thursday May 31 at the school building. The faculty is arranging the program.
Washington May 16 A War Department statement says lists of persons registered will be posted and citizens who know of unregistered individuals should report them The move aims to expose shirkers and enforce registration under penalties including possible imprisonment
Mrs Katrina Couch wife of Rev James Couch former pastor of the Christian church near St Fransville Illinois was shot in Germany. The event reportedly occurred as military authorities intercepted a letter she wrote to her husband expressing strong anti German views. The letter may have influenced her death according to Mr Couch though details remain unclear.
Washington reports the government authorized its first loan to Russia amounting to 100 million dollars. The loan increases allied support to 626 million dollars to date.
