A man and a companion escaped unharmed when a shooter fired through darkness at the Broad and Palmetto intersection, shattering a windshield in Memphis. Police searched the area, questioning several people but finding little light on a motive or suspect.
Owen Oberst a 17 year old farm boy confessed that he struck fatally harming his parents and five siblings then burned the Burns Kansas area farm to cover his crime. He said rage over his father denying use of the family car triggered the attack.
City Attorney Vincent Kilborn announced the protesters withdrew after an appeal was abandoned. The 25th paving project costing over 1 million dollars faced challenges alleging illegal contract awards, which were overruled by Judge Safford Berney last fall.
With 1,161 of 1,323 precincts reported, Alabama anti-Smith candidates Carmichael Burr and Ayers secure delegation-at-large seats. Faulk holds a fourth spot with a 7,000 vote margin as unofficial returns show the ticket dominating the statewide primary. Carmichael 119,973. Ayers 101,771. Burr 95,707.
An evening collision on Hall's Mill road near Theodore injured two couples: Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Robinson of Baltimore and Mr. and Mrs. A. Butterworth of Memphis. The other car fled the scene. its occupants were uninjured. Miss Blalack was hit at St. Michael and Bayou streets and hospitalized. Fred Logan, driver of the vehicle, faces reckless driving charges with a May 23 hearing.
Senator Cutting of New Mexico introduces five related bills on federal official nomination and election, a constitutional amendment to empower Congress over nominations and elections, and a provision barring violators from congress. A bill would create a congressional agency to audit candidate reports, investigate credentials, and report contest facts to Congress.
Outgrowth of a collision at Old Shell road and Lafayette street on March 28 sees Minnie M. Boylan named defendant in damage suits totaling 6500. E M Stickney Jr seeks 000 for injuries including a broken leg. E M Stickney Sr seeks 1500 for his child's injuries. Rosa Lartigue sues Clara Moskowitz for 5000 for assault and battery. Moskowitz arraigned in inferior criminal court on assault and battery charges, demanded jury trial, released on 100 bond.
Rev J E McCann has been assigned to Mobile to follow up the campaign for funds for the Methone Memorial at Montgomery. The sum of 60000 dollars is sought in this district.
Increasing cloudiness with possible local thunder showers on Saturday especially in extreme north portions. Cooler Saturday in north areas and light to gentle variable winds in Mississippi. Southeast and central sections show some showers tonight with cooler conditions inland. Northwest Florida expected fair tonight and Saturday with light variable winds.
The city recreation department presents a music program at L Park tonight at 7. Students from all playgrounds and schools perform under Miss Eustice Graham Miss Katherine Shaw and others. A silver cup is awarded for the best harmonica group. The program includes America the Beautiful Blue Heaven The Big Parade and audience participation in America.
Walter Hagen won the British Open with a 72 hole total of 292 at Sandwich England. He posted two final rounds of 72 to claim his third British title after wins in 1922 and 1924. Gene Sarazen finished runner up at 204 for the last round and Archie Compston was three strokes back at 295.
Two men and two girls were arrested late Thursday on charges under the Mann Act. The case involves alleged transportation for immoral purposes and is now before the district court. Further details were not disclosed in the initial report.
The supreme court ruled the act authorizing sheriff fees for services to the inferior criminal court invalid. Pat Byrne, sheriff of Mobile county, had sought the same fees from the inferior court that he receives from the circuit court, but the last legislature’s related act was struck down.

J. F. Wilson twenty six year old third officer on the Leviathan and brother of Harry Wilson Grant store manager spends vacation in Mobile. He has just completed his 62d voyage to foreign countries a record for an officer so young.
The Mobile Chamber of Commerce traffic department will ask the Interstate Commerce Commission to suspend through rates from Chicago and Ohio River points to the Pacific coast via Illinois Central Railroad to New Orleans and by the Redwood Line to the west coast. Executive committee directs R G Cobb to file the petition. Applies only to domestic traffic.
Swollen Ontario rivers fed by melting snow and ice kept rising May 11 in flood zones. Ottawa river level climbs while the Montreal river in northern Ontario nears a peak not seen since 1908. In the Cobalt district floods forced mine operations at the O'Brien mine Gowganda to halt as a power flume washed out. Elkhart roads closed after a bridge failure and two feet of floodwater in parts of town.
Engineering offices of Mobile county will move from the courthouse to 458 Government Street Monday. J Converse, the county highway engineer, announced the change after board of revenue authorization for renting new quarters. Most arrangements are complete and initial equipment will depart the present location Monday.
Senator Fess a Republican from Ohio moves from the finance committee to the foreign relations panel to fill the vacancy caused by Frank B Willis death. Senator Keyes of New Hampshire will take Fess’s former finance seat and Senator Cutting of New Mexico is named to Keyes’s spot on the agriculture committee.
In six counties of the First District anti Smith candidates D H Edington of Mobile and A J Johnson of Thomasville win a combined 12 330 vote majority over pro Smith contenders Joseph N McAleer and Albert B Towle of Mobile. Edington and Johnson lead in each county with Edington carrying six counties. Johnson also tops McAleer in Senate results by 5 564 with Towle trailing by 6 674.
Edington led with 13 201 votes across six counties including Mobile Choctaw Washington Clarke Marengo and Monroe while A S Johnson had 13 190. McAteer 7 626 and Towle 6 516 supported a pro Smith ticket. In Mobile Edington 3 643 and Johnson 2 808 underscored anti Smith totals. Predictions favored McAleer and Towle before election results.
Governor A V Donahey of Ohio and Mrs Donahey with son James arrived in New Orleans from Tampa to rest after a recent automobile accident. The party planned a brief stay then to motor to Memphis for a few days.
United States Industrial Alcohol Company and National Distillers Products Corporation raise denatured alcohol delivery prices after June to 42 cents a gallon in tank cars for June 43 in July 44 in August and 45 cents for the rest of the year. Drums and carload lots cost two cents more per gallon.
James W. Good testifies before the senate campaign funds committee that the Washington commerce secretary HQ received 50150 in contributions and spent 42032.16. He notes 1000 came in unmarked currency deposited pending donor verification and lists expenses including telegraph postage salaries travel and editorial research across the Hoover network.
David Gordon a 19 year old University of Wisconsin student was paroled by the New York parole commission from an indeterminate reformatory term for writing an obscene poem. He has served 35 days of a sentence up to three years and may resume studies at Wisconsin, aided by a Zona Gale scholarship.
Thousands of gray veterans and their families gathered in Little Rock for the annual reunion marking the Confederate veterans and Sons of Veterans events. General A T Goodwyn was elected commander in chief, while Brigadier General Z A Wardlow died on the eve of the parade. The United Confederate Veterans and Grand Army of the Republic session closed without joint plans, and the Sons of Veterans rejected a shared reunion bill.

First stop Nashville to talk with Tennessee federal reserve member banks directors, then Tulsa to address the American Bankers Association, then St. Louis for a directors meeting of the federal reserve bank and St. Louis district member banks.
