In a fortuitous breakout attempt, a pair used scissors and a fragment of iron bar to remove mortar from bricks in the Bull Ring of the city jail. The crack allowed a narrow exit path, but the leap was thwarted as guards intervened during the effort.
Chief of Police Warren Burch leads an investigation into a prison escape at Ty. He states prisoners were not locked by the turnkey and the keeper of the bull ring handled checks. Durden, on duty when the escape was found, has been suspended.
Two white inmates escaped from a local prison early Friday by digging a hole in the rear wall. Officers McKay and Quinn had Cassldy Sedalia Missouri and John McKenzie of 1503 Basil Street in custody on charges. Turnkey Durden found the breach at 2 40 a m nine feet from the floor. Bricks and mortar littered the area as guards checked the inmate list. Cassidy, named as an alleged deserter, was not wanted by the army and his release was planned for Friday.
John Lennox aged 30 and Clark Cortes of Pensacola Florida were brought into custody here on Thursday and sent back to Pensacola Friday morning to answer minor charges.
The infirmary received multiple offers of blood Friday after a feature in The Register. Miss Myrtle O Thorson said several people volunteered and blood tests would continue later Friday to determine suitability for a transfusion. The patient’s name is withheld at physicians request.
Yachting activities headline a weekend with Buccaneers Club races on the western shore and Mobile Yacht Club hosting the Gulf Yachting Association events. The key issue is Buccaneers Yacht Club’s bid for Gulf status, opposed by Mobile Yacht Club which has voted to exclude the western shore club, pending protest rules.
J M Dewberry, president of the Dauphin Island Land Company, said before the June 3 election the company would demonstrate financial ability to develop the island. County engineer John R Peavy outlined bonding sufficiency to bridge water to the island. The agreement pledges 30 percent of land sale proceeds for water works electricity sewerage streets and baths to develop the resort.
Final details of the federal census in Mobile were being completed by supervisor Evan B. Davis and enumerators. O M Phelps of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce said letters were sent to 606 local concerns with about 100 replying, showing missed employees and a push to count every person before the deadline.
Mobile police issued tickets to hundreds of car owners for brake inspection violations under the city ordinance requiring twice yearly inspections and visible tags. The drive began late Thursday and continued Friday with cars stopped or parked vehicles ticketed. A 50 cent fee may be charged by the inspecting garage for the service and tag placement.
Jack Wheeler pled guilty in inferior court to violation of the prohibition law. He was fined 50 dollars and 20 days in jail in default of costs. C A Bolling and Robert Bolling received more time to pay fines after pleading guilty to the city marijuana ordinance. The arson case of Charles Howard was removed from the docket. J C Johnson’s case was reset to May 27 for passing worthless checks. James Long’s trial on transporting prohibited liquors went to the jury at noon.
Mrs. Floyd W. McRae and her brother A B Stout disappeared after departing from Candler Field at dawn on a projected Pacific coast flight. They were to land in St Louis for a plane change en route to California where a park dedication was planned in memory of a relative.
Otto E Glocke 47 of 771 Carroll street Brooklyn was found dead in a New York sleeper dressing room before 3 am Friday while traveling to Mobile to seal a timber deal with E C Pierce. He reportedly held hardwood interests in Santiago Delos Cabello San Domingo. Glocke, single, leaves several relatives in Brooklyn. Higgins and Conditt held the body for burial instructions.
State child welfare department urges that school children under 17 must obtain employment certificates. Miss Ruth Scandrett, chief child labor inspector, writes to Miss Bessie Rencher in Mobile about the regulations and common lack of knowledge during the summer job season.
Miss Mabel Webb sues Mobile and Robert R. Marshall in circuit court seeking 35000 for injuries after stepping in a hole on Dauphin Street near Common on October 15, 192%. She claims medical treatment was required and damages are sought in the trial this Friday.
Market report shows public utility stocks and specialties leading a mild rise while brokers loans decline by 200 million dollars. Copper stocks gain, oils rise 12 cents a gallon in the east, Loews and Radio Keith Orpheum advance on merger rumors. United States Steel hits 170, with gains in Public Service of New Jersey and Consolidated Gas. Bears retreat.
James Matthew Maxon Jr. 21 son of the Tennessee bishop was indicted by a general sessions grand jury for second degree murder in the death of 73 year old Paynter in a boarding house brawl last month. He has been jailed since April and faces 20 years to life if convicted. His father Bishop James Matthew Maxon of Chattanooga visited him at Tombs prison and promised to return for the trial and aid in the defense.
Texas rangers and Grayson county officers faced one of the county’s largest crowds at Sherman as a mob sought to lynch George Hughes 41 accused of a criminal attack. In the courtroom the rangers surrounded Hughes while officers and Sherman firemen battled a crowd overrunning corridors lawns and streets.
Fred Wortham a 30 year old Black man from Biloxi Mississippi was badly injured when run over by an L and N freight train at Elmira street foot at 1120 Friday morning He lost his left leg and sustained cuts and bruises while attempting to catch a ride He received first aid at the scene and was taken to City hospital
Lewie Little, business manager for the Mobile Southern Association club since last winter, resigned Friday. He cited no friction with Jimmy Hamilton and said he leaves with best wishes, planning to stay in Mobile in another line of business if a profitable connection is found. Hamilton, James Drohan, and Peter Betan will oversee club affairs.
Frank Goldsborough a 19 year old avi ator began a junior west east flight from El Paso Texas municipal airport at 10:10 A M aiming to cross the continent to Dallas Texas The patrol likely tracks the attempt as a record flight for youths with a west east route.
President Hoover nominated Owen J. Roberts of Philadelphia for the Supreme Court. A noted government prosecutor in Teapot Dome and naval air cases, Roberts brings long public service and legal experience from Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. Support from Republican senators was noted at a White House breakfast. If confirmed, the court shifts a seat from the south to the north.
Dr Andrew J Baas of Columbia Missouri slit his wrist three times with a razor in his Bentonville Arkansas jail cell in a bid to kill himself. He was unconscious and in serious condition after the attempted self harm and remained in a jail room hours later under guard. Baas has admitted a $200000 life insurance murder plot in the slaying of William R Pearman of Columbia.
Federal Judge Halsted Ritter granted a hearing on a petition for a temporary injunction to stop Miami police from arresting Al Capone without a warrant. The hearing set for 5 p.m. EST followed Capone’s habeas corpus release with his brother John and two companions, after two and a half hours in municipal jail.
Bodies of a woman and two men were recovered from the wreckage of Armour and Company’s smokehouse after an explosion late yesterday. The count of dead reached 11 with six missing, and officials fear 17 or 18 may be killed. The blast, attributed to gas leakage from underground mains, injured about a dozen workers. Names of the dead and several missing are listed, with details continuing on page 6.
In Sheboygan Wisconsin on May 9 prosecutors argued the aim of state election laws in the ouster trial of Governor Walter J Kohler. They disputed the admissibility of about 350 submissions to the jury and contended the defense misstated the needed burden of proof.
Three witnesses testified before the Anderson roving committee in Jackson about alleged bribes tied to state contracts. O J Turner A A Gore and M J Reed denied accusations while Senator Len G North faced questions over claims Reed would secure large state contracts for payoff funds.
Formal charges against James Cannon Jr. alleged to involve stock and political actions during the 1928 presidential campaign were filed with Dr. F C Culver, chairman of the Hipisco pac y committee. The notice names Rev Rembert of Washington Ga and others including John M Moore and Bishop Edwin Dubose of Charlotte and Bishop W A Candler of Atlanta. Culver refused to detail the charges.
