Washington May 8 A. P. report says Wayne Wheeler led a dry forces push against modifying prohibition law before the house judiciary committee. Francis Harley argued for referendums while Wheeler denounced 275 beer and noted states broadly ban such beer outcomes.
Indiana May primary results show Id Jackson leading Republicans with a large plurality and Klan backing. State convention delegates appear pledged to Jackson, shaping Republican control as May meetings set the nomination path and party strategy.
In Amite, six men including Joseph Rini, Joseph Giglio, Andrea Lamantia, Joseph Bocchio, and Roy Leona await execution for the Independence bank murder three years to the day. Guards maintained strict perimeter as the condemned, brought from New Orleans, prepared for the noon to 3 PM date with no public access.
McLeod, 35, of Dothan, driver of the auto in which Mrs. Dorothy Jackson of Birmingham was killed near Mt Vernon, is charged with second degree murder. Bond set at 500 dollars. The wreck occurred on a sharp curve. Jackson’s body sent to Mobile. McLeod says he met Mrs. Jackson in Mobile and was en route to Calvert, Ala., when the car skidded into a ditch.

New York May 8 extra dividend of half of one percent on both common and preferred stock of the Alabama Great Southern Rail road Company was declared by directors in addition to the regular semi annual dividend of 3 12 percent. The extra and regular dividends are payable to stock of record May 24 for common and July 12 for preferred, with payment dates May 28 and August 14 respectively.
Paris May 8. French wireless company operators largely walked out when night shift began to protest dismissals and seek higher pay. The strike is seen as possibly the first wireless operators strike on record.
Soviet authorities restrict private print advertising and require government controlled outlets for all advertisements. The move limits commercial activity and centralizes public notices, signaling tighter state control over the press and economic messaging.

In Covington Kentucky on the 1921 whiskey transaction case Congressman John W Langley’s associates Walter s Carey of Canton Ohio and M E truth of Alliance Ohio pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the government. Co defendant Milton Lipschitz remained on trial as W K Gray sought to strike testimony about Huth and Carey. Judge Cochran overruled the motion and Huth and Carey were removed to prepare bonds awaiting sentencing after the trial.
Havana May 8 quiet has been restored in Santa Clara province after the collapse of the military revolt. The government adopts a conciliatory policy toward leaders and extracts promises they will not agitate again. Rebels captured or surrendered are disarmed and sent home.
In Paris May 7 1944 French Minister of the Colonies Jean Fabry urged intensifying cotton production in colonies to offset expected reductions in American cotton exports. He warned the United States may not always supply enough raw material for France’s textile industry and called for policy action.
Paris reports that enthusiasts will stage a two day aviation event at Vincennes on June 8 and 9. The program includes airplane races for craft under a specified weight and demonstrations of acrobatics, with aims to amuse Olympiad crowds in the absence of aerial events.
New York May 5 Delegates at the Democratic national convention will have restricted smoking due to women present and fire rules. Joseph P Day of the New York committee announced a local department store will provide a club room for delegates and guests at Madison Square Garden. The garden theater will become a smoking lounge with postal and telephone facilities and a separate entrance from the garden.
Fay Garcia, one of three Cubans held at Ocala Florida for alleged neutrality law violations, is identified as the son of General Garcia y Velez, head of Cuba’s Veterans and Patriots Association. The men faced possible court action for release this week and were held on $3000 bonds. planes reportedly belonged to West Coast Air Line.

Owned by David Cohen Co New York and handled by Van Heyningen Brokerage Co she sails under the American flag carrying lumber to Philadelphia. Captain Urquhart commands a large crew as the ship draws attention along the waterfront.
Maj. Co. W. Ware former director of sales of the war department testified at the trial of John J. Phillips of Georgia and five others charged with conspiracy to defraud the government by selling surplus lumber from army cantonments. He said Morse had nothing to do with price fixing or contract execution and praised Morse’s service and reputation amid tough cross examination.
The Pan-American Union governing board votes to hold the first Pan American conference of journalists in America in April 1926. Secretary Hughes as board chairman is authorized to fix the opening date and appoint the organizing committee.
A two story frame house at 63 Centi Street, owned by the Del Barco estate and occupied by W. J. Denton, burned twice within an hour. The first blaze was found in a pantry at 4 10 and was subdued by fire crews, then reignited in the upper area between roof and ceiling, with interior water damage. The second fire started in a bathroom. the department also answered calls at 453 Monday Street and 184 South Lawrence Street.
