The Mobile area posted a record low of 44 degrees during Wednesday morning, the coldest late season reading in 50 years of bureau records. Pensacola logged 44 as well while New York and nearby locales stayed milder. temps are expected to rise by Thursday with normal levels by week’s end.
A road committee inspected Old Shell road to decide if the 16 foot width should widen to 18 feet. Finley McFadyen chairs the group with Henry Brannan and Albert Freeland. McFadyen cited potential need for widening or installing speed-breakers at Spring Hill by the railroad crossing. Brannan opposes further highway spending. Engineer estimates the extra cost at about $10,000.

The fire department responded to three calls last night and yesterday afternoon. One at 208 St. Joseph Street, a chimney fire with no damage. another at northwest Franklin and Adams with sparks. and 408 Cedar Street with slight damage in the two latter locations.
Macon Georgia May 4 The first car load of Georgia peaches to be shipped this season was traded to Marshallville near here. The car will leave tonight for the north About 50 cars will be shipped weekly says local officials.

John Mallory and Clarence Norton, who escaped from the lehedule jail Monday night, were recaptured in Pascagoula and returned to Mobile at 10 30 this morning. They are held on $1000 bond for appearance in Recorder's Court tomorrow on grand larceny charges for allegedly stealing a car owned by Mrs. Grace Frederick of South Reed Avenue.
Preparations rushed as Governor Thomas E Kilby plans a port inspection and harbor board meeting this Saturday. The visit includes vessel christening by Mrs Kilby and travel by coast guard cutter Comanche and Messenger from Anniston and Montgomery with the harbor board members in attendance.
In Chattanooga on May 4 John C. Howell of Brookmire Economic Service urged optimism for a gradual rise in business and a return to normalcy. Dr H A Morgan of the University of Tennessee spoke on education's view of conditions. The day closed with a banquet and an afternoon executive session.
Washington May 4. S R Brame supervising prohibition agent of the southern district resigns effective May 10. The move continues a pattern of Democratic appointee vacancies in treasury prohibition units as a new supervising agent for the territory will wait until David H Blair of North Carolina is confirmed and assumes control.
H. Gross, longtime superintendent of the New Albany division of Gulf Mobile and Northern Railroad, is named superintendent of the Mobile and Laurel Mississippi division. He succeeds the retired Co A Pigford in a move announced today.
Theodore Adams a truck driver is docketed at the county jail on a warrant charging a statutory offense and released on a $1000 bond to appear in the inferior criminal court Sam Chambers of 274 South Lawrence Street is the complainant.

An international wedding took place in London this afternoon as Miss Violet elft Ravengee Dee Gordon ridge of Chicago married Vicomite Jacques de Sibour. Rev Father Bernard Vaughan at Brompton Oratory officiated. The bride was given away by her father and Gordon Selfridge Jr was best man. The couple may honeymoon in the south of France before residing at Chateau du Sollier in St Laurent sur Cher. Gordon Selfridge, American millionaire, introduced the American department store to London.
Atlanta, May 4. Tec addresses on tests for tuberculosis in cattle horses and swine opened the afternoon session of a conference with over 100 representatives from 12 southern states. Kentucky state veterinarian Dr W H Simmons spoke on cooperation in fighting livestock tuberculosis. A intradermic tubercular test was demonstrated by Dr J W Fish and Dr A G Hirlem at the stock yards. Sessions end tomorrow.
In Cleveland on May 4 the Chamber of Commerce hosted the formal start of Merchant Marine Week with the christening of a model of the largest ship in the American mercantile fleet. The City of Cleveland model was named by Mrs. E. S. Bark Jr. The eighth annual National Foreign Trade Council convention opens here today with about 2,000 delegates registered and Mayor Fitzgerald among the participants.
Panama City May 4 Full consideration was given to Secretary Hughes latest note warning Panama to cede territory granted to Costa Rica under the Loubet and White awards. President Porras planned no statement until the note was digested by the administration and by citizens called in for consultation. The city remained quiet and public interest in the dispute had waned.
Frank Casher, a negro, faces circuit court on a murder charge for the October 4 killing of Walter Jackson on a gallery at his Wilkinson street home. Jury selection took an hour and evidence began at 1 PM under Judge Claude A. Grayson. Casher was indicted by the April grand jury and arrested last March.
Berlin rumors say Germany will yield to allied demands before further invasion. If current government won t sign a new accord a government will be formed that will sign. Hugo Stinnes, a key business leader, reportedly told French agents they may need to approach him again as American coal could undercut Ruhr mines.
The Mississippi Valley Association held its third annual convention in New Orleans concluding with Senator William B. McKinley of Champaign Illinois elected president. Governor John M Parker of Louisiana chosen as president and a large slate of officers and directors from multiple states was announced including Walter Parker as executive vice president and several zone vice presidents and directors from Alabama Arkansas Florida Louisiana Mississippi Tennessee Texas and others.
Building of homes and apartments is reviving across the United States, with the federal reserve board noting relief in housing shortages will lower rents. March contracts totaled over 64 million dollars in New England alone, with large gains in New York and San Francisco, while Kansas City permits doubled and Atlanta rose 50 percent.

A pendente lite injunction was issued by Judge Foster in New Orleans restraining Opelousas and other Louisiana cities from interfering with the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company over increased rates. Samuel T Ansell former acting judge advocate general of the army aided Bergdoll's escape from Fort Jay in search of a pot of gold. He faced cross examination by a House committee clarifying the gold’s location and his knowledge from D Clarence Gibboney. Westcott testified he knew nothing of the gold until after Bergdoll's escape.
The 1920 census shows foreign born white residents total 13,703,987, up 2.7 percent from 1910. New York leads with 2,783,773 foreign born whites, up 2 percent from 1910, while 20 states and DC gained, 28 states lost.
Wayne county jury returned indictments charging illegal use of banking funds against four men tied to the Jesup Banking company and the Odum Banking company, which recently shut down. The indicted are Lawrence Carter W H Tyson C L Carter and M C Dickerson who were released on bonds.
Nashville May 4 James A Grundy shot J 4 Reeves retired manufacturer and prominent citizen in the Hermitage Club then killed himself. Reeves was wounded in the breast or lung as Grundy fired during a hallway confrontation. Coroner returned verdict of attempted murder and suicide.
The International Textile Workers union and Brookside mill owners face a wage cut dispute as 19 hundred workers strike. Leaders including Frank Mepo and Knox in the federation seek state mediation in Tennessee. A reduction of 2 1/2 percent is proposed. both sides claim they will stand firm.
The Alabama Red Cross starts a May survey of coal regions with division HQs in Atlanta to assess hunger clothing and shelter needs of miners and families.
