Calvert farmer Glenn Smith faces first degree murder trial
After a three hour postponement the jury selection began in circuit court for Glenn Smith of Calvert charged with the murder of Dan Bryant. Smith claims self defense in a desperate struggle with Bryant, during which shotguns were used and Bryant was killed with his own gun. Over 50 witnesses were summoned and a special venire of 100 jurors was called. Smith, represented by Tisdale J. Tourart and Ben F. McMillan, will plead not guilty. He was indicted after a preliminary hearing and has remained jailed without bail.

The body of Miss Janie Anderson of Prichard arrives in the city at 5 15 today and will be taken to the family home for funeral arrangements. She was killed in an air mobile accident at High Point North Carolina while visiting relatives. Her father, a former Baptist minister in Prichard, died several years ago.

Co. V. Meade of 52 south Conception Street was fined $25 or 25 days by the recorder today for driving an auto past a street car discharging passengers. W. Meade, a street car motorman on Government street, testified that Meade passed the car at Government and Wilkinson streets yesterday afternoon while it was stopped and a passenger alighting. Meade paid the fine.
