City officials say they lack authority to call a street car fare election though advice from the city attorney suggests no law blocks presenting the issue at the June 23 contract lighting rate election. The move would not bind commissioners but test public sentiment and require no extra cost.
Mobile Shipbuilding Company plans to lay two additional keels for 5,000 ton steel ships, bringing the number under construction to six at the Mobile plant. Government outlay amounts to six million dollars for the six ships. General Superintendent R C Finlayson announced the schedule on Saturday.
