George Espalla of Mobile was arrested on federal narcotics charges after an alleged conspiracy and the delivery of a heroin package through the U S mails. His bond was set at 3000 by U S Commissioner J Irwin Burgett following surrender by a bondsman who signed his first bond.
Will Alexander of 405 Mar te street was sentenced to 90 days hard labor by the recorder after police testimony that he emerged from the Davis avenue A P tea store doorway amid a burglary report. Officer Tunstall and Durden testified to the arrest. Harry Wood of Cedar Point read was convicted for violating the prohibition law and fined.
Federal and county officers seized a 60 gallon drum still and four barrels of mash during a raid on Mud Creek, arresting James H Nelson. Officers Hudson McDuffie Graves reported the distillers used a movable still. the outfit was gone when approached.
Mae Gause Mrs. Kate Givens Janel Hollingsworth and Mary Wallace arrested after police raided 1612 Government Street. They were fined 51 dollars and costs and sentenced to 30 days D. H. Edington Tuesday. A prior raid occurred Saturday and another raid Monday found the same four women.
Partly cloudy and cooler conditions across the region with Alabama and Mississippi forecasting lower temperatures and frost likely in northern areas. Daily river bulletin notes observations at 7 am CST and river forecasts for the Bigbee and nearby branches with regional weather impacts.
J J Jordan of Atlanta was chosen president of the National Retail Credit Association at its sixth annual conference in Mobile Alabama. The meeting named Atlanta as 1982 convention site with H C Stroupe of Memphis elected vice president and L S Gilbert of Atlanta named secretary. A Mobile board of directors was appointed including John J Mason Sam Mayor R Case Stansell Sam Jenkins J J Egger H S Wilkinson M J Heimbry and C E Lanback. Atlanta won the mileage trophy for its delegation to Mobile, and the final day opened with remarks by President Mason and a sermon by Rev C E Mount.
Sheriff William H. Holcombe challenged a $75 fine for failing to summon three witnesses in a robbery case. Judge Claude A. Grayson set aside the fines after Holcombe explained his deputies had attempted to contact witnesses at their homes and that a long standing practice was used. A related case against John Williams involved a $25 conditional fine for not summoning Joseph Drahan ley.
An epidemic of banditry hit Mobile with burglaries and robberies reported in the last 24 hours. A fruit stand on northwest Nak'oon avenue near Elmira, a Dexter avenue residence, a Government street home, and a delivery boy were targets. The Bryan fruit stand was robbed with $1.50 stolen through a front door entry. Mrs. W. McCarron reported a nighttime intrusion at 10:50.
The Albert S Towle Convict Farm at Irvington will not compete with county farmers. Products will be used to feed convicts and road mules. Chairman Edward Laurendine said hogs will be killed to provide meat for the convicts and road camps, and cane syrup will be provided.
A federal suit in Mobile challenges state taxes on bank stock claiming discrimination against national banks. Judge Robert T. Ervin issued a restraining order halting Dallas county and Selma city taxes on bank stock. The Selma National Bank, American National Bank and Trust, and Merchants National filed petitions with Selma officials and local attorneys representing the banks and state.
Gray Irby a 19 year old Murphy high school scholar drowned when a skiff capsized on Mobile River near the bay bridge. His father Dewitt Webb watched from shore as three brothers were rescued and rescuers conducted an intensive search along the tawny river to recover his body.
The city commission agreed to study whether it can defer action on selling property to satisfy delinquent taxes. John Glennon asked for 30 to 60 day postponement due to business conditions. A resolution to align with a county board on related steps was adopted. Local officials attended the federal court session.
Police investigate jealousy as a motive in the death of Woodrow W. Gilmore 19 a dock worker found battered and shot in a riverfront vacant lot. Six men questioned a 17 year old girl Margaret Murphy held for further questioning as the inquiry focuses on alleged attentions and threats.
An elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. George Scott both about 70, were found near Florence Alabama. He was dead and she was semi conscious in a ditch after a suspected robbery. The pair had returned from Atlanta the day before. Authorities believe Scott was murdered and his body discarded. both were struck in the head with a heavy instrument.
Hollywood note says Pi-Robert Edeson died of heart disease at his residence after weeks of ill health. A longtime stage and screen actor, he began as a leading man at 19 and achieved early success opposite Maude Adams in The Little Minister. Edmund Breese, a close friend, disclosed the death.
An Alabama trainmaster 8 J Brock of Louisville and Nashville rail lines is targeted by a warrant after a March 14 payroll train holdup near Magella Alabama. Arthur Burnap implicated with two Birmingham men J R Brown and Hiram F Williams. Burnap later arrested in Chicago.
State Senator J. M. Bonner of Camden Wilcox county a former Mobilian visited Mobile Tuesday to meet Mayor Leon Schwarz and officials. He noted prior visits to Wilcox county in 1910 and said he has served several terms in the Alabama legislature and favors Mobile beneficial bills.
Vine Pierce and Lucy Pierce, both of Wheelerville, were docketed at the county jail on assault and battery charges after Agnes Havens alleged she was attacked. F. W. Jones of Prichard faced a reckless driving charge. Jesse J. Lemming, arrested in Liberty yards by Special Agent A. W. Crow, was docketed on a concealed pistol charge.
Theodore Dreiser arrived in Hollywood and declined reconciliation with fellow author Sinclair Lewis after a recent assault in New York. He muttered he would respond similarly if faced with a repeat incident and hinted at continuing the feud.
Chicago prosecutors outline a murder case against Leo Brothers for the June assassination of Alfred Lingle Tribune reporter. Assistant States Attorney Wayland Brooks lists eight eye witnesses who would testify Brothers fired the fatal shot. A trunk store clerk will also testify to a bag purchase by Brothers on the day of the killing. Kentuckians Aplegate, Mrs. Aplegate from Owensboro say they saw the shooting and the slayer flee.
Bert Oglesby and Leonard Hays of Tulsa Mabel Wertz and Fay Harris of St. Louis indicted by Washington county grand jury on unlawful imprisonment robbery of an automobile and assault with intent to murder after a Florida wide banditry chase. Defendants pled not guilty and complained of no legal aid. Trial date set for next Monday.
Robbers burned the vault combination and escaped with currency estimated between 1700 and 5000. Cashier G W Carter said the thieves pried a door open and wore gas masks. President W J Weldon found the safe moved to the main floor when opening today.
President Hoover praised Puerto Rico’s progress before assembled native leaders in Ban Juan and San Juan. He warned of grave problems including a rapidly growing population outpacing local livelihoods and industries while pledging administration support and cooperation en route to the Virgin Islands.
St John’s Newfoundland March 24 Captain Jacob Kean brought home an Arctic rescue tale from the Sagona. Survivors from the Viking disaster were aboard with one dead Navigator Kennedy. Kennedy fell ill as Lagona resupplied the Wadham Islands near Newfoundland. Captain Kean heard the vivid account of Varick Frissell and companions amid a deadly wreck.
A mass meeting called by the Alabama Women’s Club in Birmingham aims to push legislation to abolish the current board of the Alabama Girls’ Training School. Proposals include creating a state board of control with local Birmingham representation and tighter financial oversight.
Six suspects faced Birmingham detectives over the death of Dennis O. Keith 29 who plummeted from a downtown hotel room during a game. Police said Keith was threatened and beaten in the room before he fell. Four men Otis Stephens Tom Renfroe John Pollis and Dave Brodie admitted they were present during the confrontation. Other two admitted being there but left before the fall.
John Henry Roberts, 30, and Sp eer Roberts, 50, were jailed on prohibition charges after deputies and a federal officer seized 13 gallons of whiskey from a house in Allenville. The deputies involved were Hobson Hargett and McDuffie.
Sheriff Sam D. Stearns of Montgomery arrived in the city to take back George Ner and Thomas Kent, two Black men charged with grand larceny in a Betrseflam racket case. Neighbors identified them, naming the suspects as the culprits in the alleged flim-flam scheme.
Scooba Mississippi authorities report Bill Carley was fatally shot last night at the home of Mrs Gupert amid a possible unwritten law plea. Officers said the case is under investigation and no arrests were announced.
