Rescue efforts continue after a maritime accident leaving several victims seen on broken ice floes and in a small dory. FRISSELL remains missing as emergency crews and volunteers search shorelines and waters for survivors and the missing person.
Wireless operator Miss Ottis Bartlett describes a night explosion near Morse Island Newfoundland. Survivors walked eight miles over ice to shore as 118 men including the Viking captain landed. The captain estimated 158 aboard. many injured and about 26 believed dead.
The sealing steamer Viking exploded and sank off Horse Island killing at least 25. Captain Abram Kean Jr and 117 aboard reached the island after 24 hours on ice floes. Missing include Varick Frissell cameraman A E Penrod and Russell Sargent.
Plans were underway Tuesday to draw names for grand and petit jury service in the circuit court beginning.
All officers must return to Company M. Kellum, charged with forgery, was sought by deputies from Sheriff Williams office. Kellum disappeared after the January term. H. E. R. Kirkland is the complainant against Kellum.
Representative Robert Murray of Huntingdon announced plans in Nashville to introduce a bill repealing Tennessee’s 1925 anti evolution act that bans teaching evolution in schools funded in part or whole by the state. The 1925 Scopes trial drew famous lawyers, national attention, and heated debate over science and religion.
Dr Julius Tutweiler Wright prominent Mobilian educator and head of the University Military School and Girls' Preparatory School remained seriously ill with pneumonia at his Dauphin street home after several days confined to bed.
About 100 men armed with shotguns and revolvers ambushed six Phillips Pipe Line guards en route to escort laborers to tanks in a labor trouble related assault. Four guards, all deputy sheriffs, were wounded as gunfire lasted about 12 minutes and 400 shots were fired.
John Prestidge, 43, a former plant er and oil service station operator, robbed Silver Creek State Bank of 1300 dollars and fled. Police tracked him to his home where he attempted to direct his helper before pulling a pistol from a hidden space and killing himself. Sheriff W J Brouin said Prestidge may have staged the bank robbery to cover debts.
Two bombs exploded at 5 30 am and 7 am at Belgrade military academy but caused no serious damage and no arrests were reported. Later four bombs hit public buildings including the war office and finance ministry. Major Rekalevitz was fatally wounded quenched by a defender. Authorities arrested twenty suspects, suspecting Albanian or Bulgarian comitadjis.
New York authorities deny foul play in the death of a hospitalized girl after four days in Bellevue Hospital. Dr Ammner Guonzales says death was natural, bruises superficial possibly from bed falls. Organ analysis will continue.
In Washington on March 17, debate swelled as about 150000 workers weigh the idea of a year round Saturday half holiday. An arson indictment looms for a man named in criminal court. The board has indicated he may face the maximum term.
Mobile officials respond to azalea garden thefts with police help and planned plain clothes patrols on weekends. Azalea Trail founder Sam H Lackland urged security measures as Sheriff Holcombe to provide exterior protection while the City Commission schedules April 7 discussion on Hallett Street district zoning. The commission also to discuss a Royal Street loop retrace and plans a Tuesday conference with county legislators on municipal legislation.
James Howard, a negro, indicted by the January grand jury for robbing Oscar E Williams of Greers store Plateau, went on trial before Judge J Blocker Thornton. Howard is defended by Stallworth and Whiting. Solicitor Chamberlain seeks the death penalty. Rogge fined for drunken driving. Fowler pleads guilty to resisting an officer.
The home of I. B. Tigrett, president of the Gulf Mobile and Northern Railroad, in Jackson Tennessee, was badly damaged by fire on Monday. The Tigrett family reportedly fled the home as investigators in Mobile acknowledged the blaze but did not release damage estimates.
Ireland turns green in memory of Saint Patrick. People wear green on coats and lapels to honor the legendary figure credited with many feats including the extermination of snakes from Ireland.
Lenox S. Rose of Rosewood New Jersey and his wife visited Mobile for several days with H B Denniston at the American National Bank. He is a millionaire capitalist and Toledo Scales chairman and expressed confidence in Mobile's future during their stay before continuing to Montana and then to Rosewood estate.
County commissioners of Alabama ex-officio chairs will hold their second annual convention in Mobile on April 20 and 21 instead of April 15 and 16. The change was announced by Harry Culverhouse of Birmingham as dentists’ convention dates conflicted with the original plan. M. G. Dukes, a former filling station employee, was arrested Monday night by Detectives Moody and Franco on a statutory charge in a warrant sworn by Sheriff Be B. Fagin of Fort Valley Peach County Georgia.
Joseph T. Robinson, 77, longtime editor of the Goldsboro Daily Argus for four years until retirement, died early today from influenza complications in Goldsboro North Carolina.
Federal court to hear habeas corpus to prevent removal of Paul G. Cazalas former Mobile sheriff to Mississippi for trial. Government alleges embezzlement connections in Mississippi but Cazalas claims none. Indictments exist at Mobile and Meridian.
Paul G. Cazalas former Mobile and county sheriff faces a Meridian indictment over alleged embezzlement of 71000 from the First National Bank of Laurel Mississippi last August. A certified copy of the indictment is said to be en route to Mobile.
Lucille Owens of 405 North Washington Avenue told police an unidentified Black man entered her house Monday night and held a gun while stealing $5. She said he fired five shots into the air as he fled.
Chief White Eagle described as a full-blooded Indian from Oklahoma was detained by Mobile police after a disturbance near Lawrence Street. He was taken to headquarters as local residents reported the incident and police dubbed it a drinking orgy.
A $2 500 bail is posted in a Burgett case linked to a grand jury indictment this week. Details remain undisclosed as officials refuse to discuss the nature of the offense or the alleged conspiracy to defraud. Additional arrests were reported and the matter is being handled by the government office.
