Two American sub chasers stood by to stop the Western Union Cable ship Robert C. Clowry from resuming the Miami Barbados cable connection. Sub chaser No. 329 arrived from Key West to reinforce No. 154 which halted work by firing a signal shot across the Clowrys bow.
Mobile officials and business leaders attended a Montgomery hearing on proposed Alabama rail rate hikes tied to the Interstate Commerce Commission ruling. R. G. Cobb of the Mobile Chamber will file a protest on behalf of local merchants as the move could boost Meridian against Mobile and affect neighboring Mobile area trade. The case has spanned years and involves shifts to align Alabama rates with interstate patterns.
Closing the ninety year anniversary, Government Street Presbyterian installs Dr. Dunbar H. Ogden as pastor. Former pastors Dr. Henry Wade DuBose and Dr. A. F. Carr preside at services, with Dr. D. A. Planck and Rev. Excell Fry assisting and DuBose delivering the morning sermon and communion.
Proctor Howell, a negro chauffeur for B. H. Fountain, was fined fifty one dollars and costs in recorder's court for taking and using his employer's car without consent. Fountain testified that Howell used the car to fetch gas and kept it overnight and into the next morning.
A five passenger Velie automobile belonging to Miss Eloise McAndrews was stolen after 4 30 Monday morning from Dearborn and Augusta streets. Police and sheriff offices issued a description with license and motor numbers to nearby cities. The car stood in front of B Gonzales the McAndrews chauffeur’s home at the time.
Lamar Y. McLeod Post of the American Legion starts a membership drive in Mobile with individual members conducting the effort for four days. Teams and workers will be organized at the March 10 armory meeting led by Commander Cecil Bates.
William M Wood aged 91 and a longtime Mobile resident died peacefully at his 858 Elmira street home just one month after his wife. He was active in the Order of Odd Fellows and is survived by relatives. Funeral arrangements pending.
The county board of equalization members A S Lyons Espalla and H W Fowler sought salaries for late 1918 but County Treasurer George E Stone again refused payment citing no law requiring the salaries. Legislature later passed a 1919 relief bill, but Stone rejected it lacking an enactment clause. the case may go to mandamus.
The Mothers Army and Navy League meet at the Van Antwerp building to decide the memorial chimes site honoring Mobile county World War soldiers. A proposed location is Government Street and Loop intersection with Government Street Improvement Association assisting. Twelve thousand dollars has been raised to buy the chimes.
Right Reverend Edward P. Allen bishop of Mobile was received by Pope Benedict at the Vatican on Sunday. The pope expressed pleasure at seeing the Mobile bishop who has been unable to visit Rome since 1914. Congratulations were extended to Bishop Allen for his report on conditions in his diocese. The pope personally thanked Bishop Allen for the Peters Pence he brought.
Civic and Patriotic League members are called to meet Thursday at 11 in the Battle House. President Mrs. B A Bowman says the session will complete committees and review previously discussed matters of importance.
Donal O Callaghan lord mayor of Cork spoke to a small crowd in Charleston urging recognition of the Irish republic. The event drew protests from the Charleston Post and the American Legion and a mass meeting was canceled by relief organizers. Patrick Kennedy presided. Acting Mayor Barkerding refused street meeting authority.
The dwelling owned and occupied by J. W. Conway at 63 Indiana Avenue was totally destroyed by fire at 12 30 this morning, with most contents lost. Firemen from Companies 3, 5 and 19 reported the blaze started between roof and ceiling from an unknown cause outside city limits. The house was practically destroyed when responders arrived.
Washington March 7 senate planned to take up several minor treaties including commercial pacts with Latin American nations alongside nominations from President Harding. The Colombia treaty and others were referred to the foreign relations committee at an executive session last Saturday.
Mystery surrounds the death of Russell Metcalf aged 22 whose body was found in a wrecked car on Fairview road at 1 am. A coroner's jury will investigate this afternoon to determine cause.
Albert T. Tellier filed suit in the circuit court against T. A. Doody for $5,000 claiming injuries from a February 12 collision at Conti and Hamilton streets when Tellier was struck by the defendant's automobile. He alleges bruises and injuries resulting from the accident.
The Colombian treaty was formally reported to the Senate by the Foreign Relations Committee today but without an announcement on when it would be considered.
Christian Christiansen a seaman from Norway filed a petition for naturalization in federal court this morning. He lists Mobile as his home in pursuing U S citizenship.

In Limerick today George Clancy, the mayor, was killed at his home while his wife was seriously wounded. About the same time Michael O Callahan, former mayor, was killed at his residence. Curfew kept residents indoors and aid delayed. The shootings are linked by locals to recent reprisals for General Cumming's assassination at Clonbanin.
James J. Davis of Pittsburgh remains a booster for the Loyal Order of Moose half million home for aged and infirm members in Mobile County. Rodney H. Brandon and Mobile lodge officials inspected Citronelle as a favored site, with plans for 1000 acres to include parks drives and an artificial lake.
The Boy Scouts began a week long effort to collect 10,000 old tin cans and debris to prevent mosquito and fly breeding. Cans are gathered at Bienville Square where they will be shown briefly before removal and destruction. The drive has health official endorsement as malaria prevention.
Alex D. Pitts of Selma Alabama district attorney for the southern Alabama district returned to headquarters after a two week absence and announced he will not seek the congressional seat created by Fred Blackmon's death. He says he will practice law after retiring next year despite urging from friends.
The regular monthly harbor board meeting is postponed to the third Tuesday of the month. The announcement came from the commission office and it is unclear how many of the trustees will attend.

A jail assault followed a street battle with residents who thwarted most attackers. Authorities plan a posse and seek grand jury probes as sheriff requests federal aid amid six weeks of armed tension along the Tennessee line.
Mrs Pattie Stone of near Farrel Alabama released a coded note she believed a carrier pigeon carried to reach its destination via United Press The bird bore a pink leg band and a metal band marked A M 51 832 with a 29 in a square.
Seth L. Walker, 40, of Rogersville, Tennessee, identified as the man who deliberately drowned himself in Varnell's spring near Dalton, Ga. Authorities say he was mentally unbalanced and a member of a prominent Rogersville family.
Denis J Dougherty of Philadelphia became a cardinal of the Roman Catholic church in a secret consistory in Rome. He received the red hat and was welcomed by the pope who cancelled all other engagements for the audience.
The body of Champ Clark was transported by a special train from St. Louis to Bowling Green Missouri. Hundreds attended the body in state at the city hall and a congressional committee joined the procession. Interment will be near his home in a local cemetery after simple services.
Police raid New Garrick hall during a radical meeting led by Elizabeth Gurley Flynn of New York. Flynn and eight Philadelphians face immediate hearings with bail set for Flynn at 2000 dollars. Authorities seized seditious literature and charged participants with organizing and fomenting unrest.
A Rome dispatch claims Count von Bernstorff, former German ambassador to the United States, arrived in Italy using a forged passport and carries about 1,000,000 francs. The Italian press calls for Bernstorff to be expelled.
Hundreds of guests at the St Francis Hotel were awakened by a blaze on the hotel roof triggered by a soap factory and laundry fire. The blast caused about 75000 dollars in damage as all city fire units rushed to the scene but there was no panic.
Five suspects are held for questioning over the theft of five mail pouches from a government mail station on Chicago Avenue. The heist, valued at about $60,000, has some recovery noted in the report.
