Hartwell will press ahead with attempts to widen St Emanuel between Government and Dauphin streets despite mayor Bates and Commissioner Schwarz defeating a condemnation resolution. Bates cites financial limits and lack of landowner agreement as reasons to halt progress.
Bond buyers question the county board of revenue office about the 1.5 million road bonds to be sold August 12 as part of the 5 million issue for county improvements. Bonds are 1000 each, dated June 1 1928, maturing June 1 1931 through 1951, with parcels from 33000 to 65000. Bidders must deposit a certified check.
Cases against Sam Powe Ed Darley Co A Davis and Harold Burklyn were postponed to Friday after police seized telegraph wires racing sheets and other paraphernalia during a raid at 1155 Selma Street. Attorney H T Smith represented the defendant and asked for charge changes. Chief Warren said a state charge likely would be filed.
The National Honorary Society for High School Journalists holds its third annual meeting at Murphy High School on Wednesday at 6 30 p m. Miss Antoinette Harford will preside and Anon L Stainbach a student at present university will speak on Practical Suggestions for High School Journalists.
Thieves entered the Palliser Beverage office overnight or early today and left without loot. Desks were ransacked and police notified. Augustus Leland was fined $25 by the recorder on a charge of assaulting and beating John Ruckers Jr., his brother in law.
Partly cloudy conditions with local thundershowers on Wednesday and little temperature change. Northwest Florida shows similar trends with scattered clouds and light showers possible in some areas.
Detectives Burton and Arras pursued Alexander Dowden after an assault on Officer Ray at Franklin and Elmira. Dowden, drunk and resisting arrest, fought back at a police call box injuring Detective Burton who sustained a broken wrist. Dowden was jailed on charges and fined or jailed.
Three persons were hurt when a car and a truck collided at Dearborn and Church streets at about 10 this morning. J. T. Tillman of Indian Springs Alabama and A. L. and Preston Cook of the Mobile Light and Railway Company were taken to City hospital by a Rothe ambulance. Preston Cook was noted as the most seriously injured with rib bruises. An onlookers and police reports mention an ambulance briefly backed onto a sidewalk to avoid hitting another car driven by a woman before continuing to the scene.
John R. Peavy county highway engineer says about six contractors will bid on the Dog River bridge. Estimates will be opened at the Thursday board of revenue meeting and contracts may be awarded the next day after engineering department reviews. The overwater span is key in the county's $5,000,000 road and bridge program authorized by the state highway commission and later by the War Department.
Agatha Kane driver of the car involved in a fatal crash with movie producer William Foxx near Old Westbury on July 17 was exonerated of blame in an inquest that returned a verdict of accidental death. Joseph Boyes, Foxx’s chauffeur, was killed and Foxx seriously injured. Foxx was released from hospital. Kane received a suspended sentence on the license charge.
Mayor Bates and Commissioner Schwarz voted against submitting a bond issue to voters to fund a city owned power plant at the waterworks to supply electric current for municipal buildings. Commissioner Hartwell denounced the decision as a historic denial of public voting on a matter vital to welfare. The plan had been delayed before a final vote in today’s meeting.
In Rhinelander Wisconsin a strong west wind abated allowing firefighters to contest a forest fire that burned over 36 square miles along seven miles in Forest and Oconto counties. The blaze pressed close to Townsend and Carter risking evacuation as wires to Townsend were cut by the flames.

The Internal Revenue Bureau announced refunds totaling 1,821,364.02 dollars to the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. The refunds cover taxes for 1923 1924 and 1925 in accord with Supreme Court decisions.

In Columbus Colorado ninety one salesmen had been questioned by noon as jurors for Dr. James H. Snook in the murder trial of Miss Theora Hix were sought. Two talesmen rejected for opposing the death penalty. The defense holds five peremptory challenges and the state two with two more for an emergency juror. Mrs E O Ricketts wife of a defense attorney sought permission to carry a gun after threats against her family.
Valdosta authorities said two men were under arrest and a third person was sought in connection with the scalding death reported yesterday. A second nephew of the victim was also wanted for questioning.

Charles P. Murphy of Mohawk Corporation Minnesota was severely bruised when a glider towed by a car crashed into a building near the Minnesota state fairgrounds. The craft was about 50 feet above ground. Murphy reportedly attempted to bank before impact and is recovering.
