A special grand jury probes alleged absentee ballot traffic in the Dauphin Island bridge bond election. In precinct 31, all 169 voters face subpoenas as the panel advances toward revenue board inquiries. William P. Bettwet appears among witnesses in Tuesday session.
Plans for the Hammel's Mutual Aid Society annual picnic to Fairhope on Wednesday are set. All store employees leave at 8 am to board a four bay steamer at the wharf for dancing swimming and various events under organizers including Mrs Henry Ritz Miss Beatrice Forest and Sam Bauer.
Firemen extinguished a blaze Monday night in a rear area at southwest Dauphin and Claiborne streets, housing the National Store. The fire started in trash and damaged wiring into the Shawthie Company shop and the Exclusive Beauty shop on Jackson Street near Conti Street.
Tuesday night and Wednesday are expected to remain generally fair with little temperature change. In Alabama and Mississippi, partly cloudy skies with localized showers possible in northern areas, cooler in extreme north portions. River bulletin time is 7 a.m. standard time on July 22, 1930.
The Mo bile board of revenue approves settling the city claim for hospital and unpaved street upkeep at 75 000, ending 10 years of litigation. County Treasurer and finance chair to plan funding. The 1921 statute set county shares at half for hospital costs and a quarter for unpaved streets.
At a Tuesday conference in the Chamber of Commerce Satsuma growers urged R G Cobb to petition the railroads for suspending newly published citrus freight tariffs from south Alabama. They oppose raising carload minimum weight to 32000 pounds and box weight to 45 pounds citing damage to fruit and packaging differences from Florida oranges. A petition for suspension will be filed immediately.
C R Hazen of Hazen & Son sheet metal workers at 55 South Water street fell ill at the National lunch room at noon Tuesday. Fellow customers gave first aid and he was rushed to City hospital by city ambulance. He was reported recovering Tuesday afternoon.
Frederick A. Stein aged 43 was docketed at the county jail on an inferior criminal court warrant for assault and battery. Agnes Stone the complainant alleges Stein struck her multiple times with his fist. Stein posted bail for his court appearance.
Fisher consulting engineer of Vernon Ohio resumes testimony at the second day of a public service commission hearing on Lewis Turner plan to build a pipeline and distribution system for natural gas from Louisiana fields to Mobile. Intervenors Mobile Gas Company and Southern Natural Gas Corporation add volume of evidence and arguments. completion beyond Wednesday is uncertain.
Five year old Claude A Betbeze Jr. suffered a scalp wound when struck with a bottle at Monroe Park. George Armour, 13, of 1061 Cottrell Street, was involved in the fight and was arrested by Officer Hubbard and sent to the juvenile home for boys.
George Payne, a seaman, swore out a warrant in inferior criminal court on Monday charging Joe White with assault with a brick. Payne says White struck him as he walked along Selma street near St. Emanuel.
Mrs. Edwin Knight, a 3 year old mother from National Park, sits in a poplar to remain until Labor Day. She claims she is the first married woman tree-sitter and plans the rest as she outlasts her 14 year old son Daniel perched nearby in another tree.
Four year old John Audhu was struck in the face by a falling milk bottle from a tree sitter’s perch in Niagara Falls New York. The bottle shattered and cut the tip of his nose.
The Mobile City Commission adopted an ordinance making it unlawful to cross railroad tracks during active grade crossing signals with fines from five to one hundred dollars. The body also debated North Royal street drainage during repaving, and approved a $274.85 refund to the LaClede hotel from 1929 license payments after a supreme court ruling found the hotel’s license fixed by room count invalid.
A Fitzhugh Lee Camp No 2 United Spanish War Veterans committee was named by Commander A J Harkins to press for a 1 000 000 state memorial building in Mobile. The panel includes City Commissioner Leon Schwarz Thad Partridge and George J Flournoy and will meet soon. Rev Father D P Lawton S J authored the resolution backing Mobile’s claim.
The Mississippi Warrior barge line will charge storage on freight at River Landings warehouses. Previously free, charges take effect August 10 after a complaint by private warehouse owners. Warehouses are located at Birminghamport and Holt on the Warrior River.
Reese Odham arraigned in the recorders court on a drunken driving charge and fined 101 dollars plus costs or three days. Wash McKaster convicted of knife assault fined 51 dollars plus costs or twenty days. Ed Coleman for disorderly conduct fined 25 dollars or twenty five days. W C Davis jailed for keeping a Sunday grocery open paid 10 dollars plus costs or ten days.
The Abba Temple Shriners baseball team from Mobile led by Carroll H. Cowan and S F Cunningham sails for Pensacola to face the Grotto organization in an annual match. A beach fish fry and dance follow the game, marking the traditional gathering.

William Frederick Martin 26 of Bay City Michigan was killed when his air mail plane from Cleveland to Pontiac crashed two miles west of Huron. The craft fell on George Beatty’s farm about 4 30 am, with no fire or gasoline odor noted. A parachute was in the pack and Martin’s body crushed in the cockpit. Coroner A Grierson and Sandusky field manager Jack Parker said gasoline may have been dumped to prevent fire. fog and rain blamed for the crash.
Patrick J. Harmon builder of the Chicago stadium and sports promoter dies after a high speed crash on the way from his Crystal Lake summer home. His wife May Harmon and Dr. E. J. Brand are seriously injured. Harmon helped fund and promote six day bicycle events and conceived the stadium project.
Peter A. Gogdanov of Amtorg the U S purchasing agent for Russia agreed to answer a political question from a congressional committee after threats of contempt. He had earlier refused to reply saying he was prohibited from discussing politics by the Soviet government.
Dieudonne Coste and Maurice Bellonte announced they would fly from New York to Dallas if they succeed their Paris to New York leg. Colonel W. E. Easterwood Jr. offers 25000 dollars for the Paris New York Dallas flight. The duo finished trial flights and tested wireless gear as the Question Mark nears readiness despite poor weather outlook.
Led by Lee Gehrbach in a Little Rock entry, seven teen planes begin the all American air derby from Roosevelt Field at 10:23 A M E S T toward Cincinnati. Gehrbach surged into the air on a long run and led the field by 23 minutes on day one, planning to widen the margin.
A burglary at the Southern Parts company on 264 North Royal Street reports a flywheel stolen from the building during Monday night. Police note the theft occurred while the premises were unoccupied and under investigation.
Frances Rodgers pleaded guilty to possession of 40 gallons of liquor and was granted a new trial. Recorder D. H. Edington placed the case on the docket for a state prohibition violation, fined her $500 and costs for 140 days, and set an appeal bond at $500.

Youngstown Ohio July 22 Attorneys for Cyrus Eaton completed their probe of Bethlehem bonuses and opened inquiry into merger terms and stock purchases for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Bethlehem Steel merger. Grace testified his 1929 bonus was 1 623 753 and 1 half of 1930 701 968.
Sheriff T A Binford of Houston wired Mobile officials with requisition papers for R C Hixon a former Texas police officer held in the county jail on desertion charges. Deputy Will Armistead aided arrest. Mrs Cleo Poulow released to Mobile officers. No federal warrants to be issued.
One woman is under arrest as provincial detectives probe a ring that allegedly profited from abandoning babies for 50 dollars each. The network is believed active in Granby and St Hyacinthe since April 10, with four babies identified as coming from a Montreal maternity home. Police say infants are taken from Montreal at night by car and left at private doors or near charities.
Three bandits robbed the First National Bank in Hartford Wisconsin taking about $100,000. They struck cashier R W Bailey and forced the safe opening, grabbing $15,000 in currency and $85,000 in negotiable securities before fleeing.
John MacDonald testified he was coached to identify two men linked to the bombing. The affidavit was made in Baltimore and repeated in San Francisco before the governor and supreme court justices, who endorsed Billings and the executive clemency bid. Governor Young received a negative advisory opinion from the court on the pardon.
Virginia Rogers known as Ginger in vaudeville and New York clubs plans to marry Keating Jr son of the late John Keating of Maryland on August 2. She is a Missouri University alumna and daughter of Mrs. Charles D. Rogers of Mexico Missouri.

Twenty four women, including six nurses at Willard Pi hospital, were treated for ptomaine poisoning after eating tainted meat served Sunday. Three remained in hospital today with others improving.
Philip G. Rumbold of New York was found sitting in his motor vehicle on the Mineola road in Port Credit. He had been struck and strangled, with his pockets rifled. No trace of the killer has been found.
